I have a big problem with the studies and statistics.
What percentage of HPV exposure and/or infection actually turns into cancer?
High-risk HPVs cause several types of cancer. Cervical cancer: Virtually all cases of cervical cancer are caused by HPV, and just two HPV types, 16 and 18, are responsible for about 70% of all cases (7, 😎. Anal cancer: About 95% of anal cancers are caused by HPV. Most of these are caused by HPV type 16.
.
But if the HPV doesn't go away on its own, it can cause changes in the cervix cells. ... There's no treatment for the types of HPV that cause changes in cervix cells, but most HPV infections go away without treatment.
.
HPV may remain dormant (“hidden”) in the cervical cells for months or even many years. While dormant, the virus is inactive; it won't be detected by testing and will not spread or cause any problems. However, the infection may then “re-emerge,” perhaps due to changes in the body's immune system.
.
Although cases of HPV are not formally reported in the United States, available data from the CDC indicate that at least 75 percent of the reproductive-age population has been exposed to the sexually transmitted HPV. Fifteen percent of Americans ages 15 to 49 are estimated to be infected.
The problem I have with the statistics when I searched the question, "What percentage of HPV exposure and/or infection actually converts to cancer" is NOBODY ANSWERS THAT QUESTION. They all cite the above statistics. Which does NOT answer the question. HPV can have severe consequences but it is NOT the ubiquitous problem some would like you to believe.
So now I ask, "how many people do you personally know that have cervical cancer?"
If you don't know anybody or just one person and fifteen percent of Americans ages 15 to 49 are estimated to be infected and 75% of the population has been exposed, it obviously isn't that big a problem in the population. It's only a problem if you are the unlucky one where the infection converts to cancer.
I know a lot of people like to read into things, so don't read into this. I am not saying not to get the vaccine. I am just cleaning up the statistics.
