I am really enjoying reading this thread. I hope it will continue.
I am, I suppose, a bit fixated on sexuality; mine and others' and the concepts around it in general. Imagine that?! ?
There are so many ways to explore this question. It is primarily (though not exclusively) a sociological question I believe.
The discussion has centered on the idea of an increasing kink factor from the "normal" center. Perhaps a sad and even frightening thought is that a large section of society has a sexuality that declines away from the "normal" sexual center arguably toward asexuality.
("Anti-kink?" |shudder| but as we say, to each their own.)
That 'vanilla' center point of reference is an ever moving target as has been expressed. But who sets that zeitgeist? And are some elements of sexuality more heavily weighted in the equation than others?
As for myself, I am a great bit kinkier than average society, but I picture myself as rather 'middle of the road' within a general kinkster world. Even if my fetish preferences were more 'extreme' might the kinky community consider me less kinky than average because I only share a few 'kinks' with my wife and currently fly solo with the 'wilder' stuff? That 'average' within in the broader kink world is a large and perhaps even undefinable set because people within this community tend to be so much more open minded and accepting in many regards. In my mind, my position on the scale slides with almost every post or comment I read here.
I am both fascinated and exasperated by labels. They are necessary toward communicating and understanding, but so often fall short of their mark.
And being at one with one's sexuality is not kinky, per se.
