My siblings and I have had constipation issues for as long as I can remember, hence enemas when needed from mom, grandma or our aunts. We usually got two or three enemas a month. If one got constipated, we all received a soapy then a rinse enema. When one was sick, that one got a couple of enemas in the morning after the others had gone to school. However, when they got home from school, they too got a daily rinse enema while one of us was home sick. During the fifties, and sixties enemas were more popular than laxatives and the go to treatment for most maladies. When mom called the doctor's office, when we were sick, the first question they asked was, “have you given them an enema?” If mom answered in the negative, the doctor's office order an enema be given. When the doctor made a house call, nine times out of ten, he ordered daily enemas for whoever was sick.
Our RN grandmother was more proactive than mom. In the beginning mom and grandma were on the same page. However, that changed the summer I turned nine. My siblings and I had more constipations issues that spring than normal. When we were taken to our grandparents after school was out for the summer. Mom told grandma, “The last two or three months I’ve had to give the kids enemas twice a week. Usually, it’s two or three times month. What do you think?” Grandma told her, “I’ll do a digital recital exam and go from there. Maybe it’s time they had a 3H enema.” Mom replied, “they don’t mind taking enemas, I don’t want anything to change that.” Within a day we each received a DRE from grandma. That started enemas every other day for two weeks then twice a week afterwards. The enemas were done in the evening at bath time by our teenage aunts. When our grandparents were out for the day, our aunts would come an ask, “we’re going to give ourselves an enema, do y’all want to join us?” The first time we joined them, they showed us what to do. Afterwards, then let us give each other enemas under their supervision. We liked being more involved an that kept us coming back. That’s when we caught on to their private enema activities when nobody was around, except us. Which was at least two days a week, sometimes more. The two girls knew, as did grandma, we liked enemas. What they didn’t realize was, we were aware they enjoyed giving us and themselves enemas, as much as we all liked receiving them. On top of that, grandma gave each of us enemas in private once a week. This continued for the next three summers until grandma taught us personal hygiene and enemas became our responsibility.
When we returned home from our visit with our grandparents that year, we were back to normal. Receiving enemas from mom an average of twice a month. Seventy years later, I still enjoyed a couple of good enemas once or twice a month for multiple reasons.
