"I'm going to start with a breast exam," Dr. Crowler said. "Lift your arms above your head please."

Leah lifted both arms above her head, and Dr. Crowler began to palpate her left breast. He used the pads of his fingers and went around in circles, starting with the top and moving toward the bottom, getting closer to the nipple.

"I'm going to check your nipple for any discharge," Dr. Crowler said, as he used his fingers to push against the sides of the nipple, causing it to harden. He immediately began palpating the other breast without a word, palpating in circles.

"And checking the nipple again," he said, pushing against it and causing it to harden.

"Put your arm down for me," he said, as he guided Leah's arm down and used his fingers to feel under her armpit, which tickled.

"And the other arm," he said, doing the same thing on the other side.

"Do you do monthly self breast exams?" nurse Faye asked from behind Leah's shoulder.

"No," Leah responded. "I haven't learned about that before."

"We'll give you a pamphlet on the way out," Dr. Crowler responded. "Let's get this pelvic exam over with. Nurse Fay, can you get the light ready?"

Nurse Fay began to put the light in the plastic speculum as Dr. Crowler pulled the stirrups out of the end of the exam table.

"Leah, place your foot here," he said, guiding her socked foot into the stirrup, "and here," guiding her other foot into place. Leah's bare bottom stuck to the white exam paper as she shifted her body to reach the stirrups.

"And we'll have you lay back," Dr. Crowler gestured, "and scoot yourself down until you feel your bottom meet my hand," he explained.

Leah laid back and used her arms to push herself forward more and more, worried about ripping the exam paper, until she felt Dr. Crowler's bare hand on her bare skin.

"Alright, time to get this party started," Dr. Crowler said, as he got up to wash his hands and put on his purple exam gloves.
