Surprise Pelvic Exam

Getting Personal

Leah stayed seated on the exam table at first, removing her baby blue t shirt to reveal her plain white sports bra. She quickly removed that too, anticipating that Dr. Crowler would return for exam soon. She put the paper gown on like a vest top with the vertical slit going down the front, the flaps just covering her breasts. She struggled to unravel the paper drape, placing it over her dangling legs still folded in thirds.

Leah anxiously thought back to what she had read in the waiting room. A breast exam, a speculum exam and a bimanual exam, she thought. And it would probably all go by just as fast as her yearly physical had. The knock at the door came just as quickly as Leah had anticipated.

"Leah?" Dr. Crowler said, poking his head in the door. "I've got nurse Fay here again to assist with your exam."

"Okay, I'm ready," Leah responded.

Dr. Crowler walked in, followed by nurse Fay pushing a tray with a box of gloves, a bottle of lubricating gel, a small vial, some small brushes and a plastic speculum.

"We already got your history during your regular physical, but is there anything else you want to tell us about?" Dr. Crowler asked, "any troubles with your periods, your breasts, any pelvic pain?"

"Well, I do get some pain during my periods," Leah responded. "Just cramps, mainly. And I experience pain when I try to insert tampons."

"I see," Dr. Crowler replied. "Well, how severe is the cramping? Do you use tampons regularly?"

"It can get pretty bad, but normally I just take something to ease it up or use a heating pad," Leah said. "And I've never actually gotten a tampon in before. It hurts too much."

"Ah, I see," Dr. Crowler said. "So you've never inserted a tampon, and you're not sexually active. Have you ever inserted anything into your vagina? A finger?" Dr. Crowler asked.

"Honestly, no," Leah said. "I've never really had any sort of physical interaction down there."

"Alright, we'll be sure to be gentle since it's your first time," Dr. Crowler responded. "Is there anything else we should know before I start the exam?"

"I don't think so," said Leah.

With that, Dr. Crowler and Leah both prepared for the first step of the well woman's exam.
