First Smear

This story is based on a story told by a friend of mine, Clare, when a group of us were sharing gynae exam horror stories one evening over (several) glasses of wine.

I've "dramatised" it but the main events are all as told by her.

It was 1988 and Clare was in her first year at a university in the northern uk. These days they have raised the age at which you get "called" for a smear in the UK to 25 but back then the uni health centre sent letters out to all the first year girls.
