Clare again knew immediately what the letter that arrived a week later was. This time she didn't feel quite the same butterflies as she opened it. Partly, she was resigned to her decision. It would be unpleasant and embarrassing but she was commited to it now. She felt a bit the same as when she had been going to have a tooth out. It just had to be got through. She had also heard positive things from some of the other members of the latest cohort about how "lovely" the nurse was. Maybe it wouldn't be so bad after all.

She opened the letter and began to read. It was not the letter she had expected...

"Dear Miss Thomas

The smear clinic has passed your notes to me with regard to your period pain. I have reviewed your notes and would like to see you in the clinic for examination.

Please would you telephone my secretary on the number below at your convenience to arrange your attendance.
