I was 18 and my mom wanted to make sure I went off to college with a clean bill of health. She made vision, dental, and general practitioner appointments for me, just as she had for my older brothers. She also made an appointment with a gynecologist for me. Her gynecologist had retired a few years earlier and Mom had started seeing someone in a larger group practice. (We lived in a small town and had to drive about an hour to see an actual gynecologist. We did have two GPs and one dentist in our town. Our eye doctor had an office in our town and a couple surrounding areas. He was in our town every Monday and the 3rd Wednesday of each month.)
The gynecologist and I (a male doctor mid-40s I would guess) had a long conversation about my menstrual cycle, sex life (non-existent at the time), if I wanted to be prescribed birth control, different types of birth control, and STDs. He did the basic ear, nose, throat, heart, lungs, feeling thyroid & neck glands part of the exam, then he walked me through how he would perform the breast exam. My breasts were examined both when I was sitting up and lying down. He told me about the importance of exams, making sure to feel up into the armpits as well as the breasts themselves. He then did an abdominal exam.
He then told me what would happen during the pap and pelvic. When the nurse came in, he pulled the stirrups out and I “assumed the position” for the first time. Looking back, I know it didn't take that long, but it was VERY uncomfortable when he opened the speculum. After he performed the exam, the nurse left and he asked if I had any questions. I did not. I went back to him a few more times until he moved to a larger city.
