Is anyone else really afraid of the doctor?

I've been to more doctors than I can count, due to never being a very healthy person, although I do everything I can to stay healthy, LOL. I guess some of us aren't destined to be healthy in life.

Therefore, I'm not afraid of the doctor. I'm just frustrated and afraid that my medical issues get dismissed or ignored, and that others look down on me because health problems are frequent and/or chronic. Seems that we accept it in the older generations but not the younger ones unless they have something like cancer or birth defects.

I love seeing other people getting shots. I love going to the doctor and receiving them as well, even though once I am there, I get scared. I don't get the same pleasure when receiving, as when watching others.

It's always fun to see someone else get hurt. Not. People have a great fascination with other folks misfortune. To whit rubbernecking at roadside accidents. In my practice I don't let others watch patients undergoing unpleasant procedures. Sorry.

I'm totally that way, have ducked dived avoided, every real Dr, examination, screening, I am 53, never been hospitalized or had any procedure done or had any time in a hospital. I've refused jobs because of physicals I'd rather avoid. However, love the idea of med fet and med fet play, but have yet to venture into it.

Like you, Bbyvega, I enjoy both witnessing and getting buttock injections, although I particularly enjoy getting them from beautiful but strict nurses. In my youth and much of adolescence I had to pull everything down and bend over receptionists' laps for my shots and wondered if those girls enjoyed watching me get them in my vulnerable bare bottom. After one such experience I got into conversation at the bus stop outside the medical centre with the receptionist from another surgery who correctly surmised that I had a shot and where when she noticed I couldn't sit on one cheek. She told me that holding teenaged boys (as I then was) across her lap and watching them get shots back there was her favourite part of the job.

I'm terribly afraid of doctors. Any sort of clinical setting makes me very uncomfortable. Perhaps it's because i am an intensely private person.

It even has a name: iatrophobia......

I have serious white coat phobia - any time I'm in for any procedure my blood pressure is through the roof. Oh, and dear god I hate blood draws. It's only been recently that I've gotten anywhere near ok with that (the nurse at my "doc in a box" office is a wonder). But yes, in spite of my fet I HATE going.

Yes, but for a completely different reason. I have no fear of exams but I would definitely avoid procedures that over time can harm the body. It has already been proven that the cleansing used for colonoscopies depletes gut flora and can cause long term problems. What happens in your gut is VERY important to health. Unnecessary radiation is another often overlooked hazard and then of course there is the overuse of drugs. Many people treat doctors as gods. That somehow they are going to fix everything that is wrong without the need for the patient to take some responsibility. I call it "getting into the system." Once you do you are on a forever treadmill of doctor visits, unnecessary tests, and drugs. If you can go through life without getting into that you are a very lucky person. You are always responsible for your own body and to put it in the care of someone else without question is a very dangerous thing. The "do no harm" that doctors swear to is a joke. That being said doctor play is always a rush and fun.

I seriously used to be. At one point they hooked me up to an EKG because blood pressure and pulse were through the roof. I have no med-fet, and I imagine that part of the anxiety had to do with a traumatic medical experience when I was younger.

As I got older I decided I needed to get over it, and managed to get things down to the near-normal range by desensitizing a bit - going ahead and doing the yearly physicals while I knew they probably wouldn't need much in the way of blood tests or other invasive things, then eventually moving to donating blood.

Got it down to near normal, then had another mildly traumatic experience involving a drug allergy coupled with a feeling of loss of control. BP and pulse rate back up, but not to the same level.

Get a doctor you trust and remind yourself that you can always say no (but do that in a nice way). Let your doctor know that you do better if they talk you through everything. Most will be very willing to help - they want the relationship to be as good as possible because it makes your health better and their job easier.

Some more than others but I don’t like it. As others have noted I (ironically, obviously) approach all aspects of gynecology with the most trepidation. I routinely have lapses of years between visits. It was 7 years before I went recently, and only then because my husband made an appt with a fertility doctor so we could work on a family. I had panic attacks the week leading up to the appointment. The work up was extreme, beyond anything I had ever previously experienced. I was not mentally prepared. The panic attacks after were no joke.

That was a year and a half ago. There has been a lot of medical stuff between then and now. This site is invaluable as I attempt to process what has happened and prepare for what is to come, with some semblance of dignity, and my mental health intact.

The fear is the best bit. It is such a strange thing to explain

I want a full examination with a play doctor because I think it will be a completely different anxiety?

I used to as a child. It probably had some influence on my career choice. Now I’m not afraid anymore. It’s too routine for me now.

Not afraid, but uncomfortable. I usually have a list of questions that I write down and will ask, but many doctors have you up on an exam table - where holding a list and writing is not so easy.

I can't say that i'm afraid of the doctors, but for some reason my boyfriend is afraid of them. Every time we're in his flat, every time i wear my costume (since he likes me wearing it. 😃), his fear of the doc is disappearing. heh.

upd: heh. So funny. Nearly all of you play the role of the doctors or of the patients, but at the same time you're terribly worried about real doctors.)))))

Not afraid of the Dr. - just a little apprehensive that he/she might find something serious.

Ah absolutely! My BP is solidly normal to lower than normal sometimes.. at the gynecologist's office, it shoots up.

I'm not as afraid as I used to be, though it depends a lot on the circumstances. If I'm feeling really unwell, or it's with a doctor I've never met before, I'm a lot more anxious.

@Newbie35 I know exactly what you mean. Normally mine is around 120/70, but at one visit the doctor wanted me to come back and have it rechecked as it was so high, and even on the third recheck it was still 146/74.

Up until this last week - I’ve been avoiding doctors for the last five years and haven’t even had a primary care. And I have a HUGE medical fetish. My blood pressure is rarely or never normal at a doctor’s office.

But I recently decided I wanted to change that. So I found myself a new doctor and a psychologist. My new doctor has made me feel SO at ease and has made my fear melt away. He understands, takes his time and listens to my concerns. And finally my blood pressure was normal at my visit yesterday! 😌 It’s honestly such a relief to not be afraid of going to the doctor anymore.

For me, no medfet, but not afraid of Dr's; but more afraid of the critisism and lifestyle changes they demand. I'm old, 60+, overweight, and a diabetic. however my bp is normal and my A1c is 6.4. So I do what I want and suffer listening to them twice a year,

I wouldn't say I'm afraid of any doctor. But like many have mentioned…I don't like going to the dentist. The only reason I hate it is because of sharp objects being used in my mouth.

I'm not afraid of doctors or dentists. If I don't like something they suggest…I just tell them to kiss my ass.
