Ladies abdominal exam... Over gown or bare skin?

This is one of my all time favorite parts of watching a woman’s exam or performing a play exam on a patient. It’s a very important part before everything else that goes on.

My family physician always checks on bare skin.

And he only checks as far down as the bladder is situated.

But that is not regularly so generally he would stop further up.

Bare skin with my knickers pulled down to where my slit starts. Twice i've had the abdominal exam with no knickers on.

If I am wearing knickers she doesn't pull them back up but asks me to remove them for my vulva to be examined.

Hate it when they examine over clothes. It must be like having sex with socks on for men. If I wear a dress they always examine over it. Modesty is becoming ridiculous in medicine.

I don't have yearly physical. I have had few appointments with gastro doctor when my stomach is hurting

My abdominal exam is on bare abdomen. Exposed from below diaphragm till above my navel. Couple of times he wanted to press below my navel also when I wasn't able to understand myself where exactly it's hurting

My family doctor doesn't check my stomach on purpose. Only if I'm in pain. To do this, I lie down on the medical couch and pull my clothes up to expose my stomach. He puts my jeans and panties down himself, as he feels more convenient. Sometimes he lowers them so low that he can freely see my naked pussy.

I always do them on the bare skin and all the way down to just above the slit.

Simple. Two word answer. Bare skin.

Always bare skin. the doctor moves my top up to my Breasts and will ask me to undo my trousers and pull them down a little. Then he will feel and listen to my bare belly.

Bare skin. OMG so much anxiety and excitement thinking about those exams.

My gyn opens up the front of the gown to examine my belly, usually my breasts and mons are exposed too.

I suppose it doesn't matter if the patient has no symptoms. However if there's any suspicion of a real medical problem then you lose considerable information conducting the exam through a gown. There are many examples of how this might play out but here's just one: If the light is just right (oblique) you can often see things on abdominal exam that you cannot feel, such as peristaltic activity or the liver margin. You'd lose that if there was a gown.

@Pollux That seems very subjective, e.g. time of day, natural vs artificial light etc Not saying it’s not effective, but wouldn’t an ultrasound, CT scan or other test be more objective and conclusive, and better to base a diagnosis on? Not questioning your medical background, I respect it, but what would prompt you to look for this? Patient complaints, issues or pain?

The abdominals i get theese days are on bare skin. I lift up my shirt and pull pants a bit down before the doctor palpate to feel my uterus, the baby, and them listen to the heart beat of the baby.

@Rigel , one uses a gooseneck lamp in the exam room. Not usually much natural light there anyway. It's effective. Just what I learned in my Physical Diagnosis class from a master

Just accompanied my girlfriend to urgent care for a pre-emp exam. The doc felt her abdomen on bare skin. He her lay down, lifted her t-shirt, lowered her sweatpants a bit and proceeded to auscultate, tap, and prod all on bare skin.

The only time I got to see my wife get a full exam, she was naked under what I can only describe as a "smock." It covered her front and back, but the sides were open.

The breast and abdominal exams were both done on bare skin, but with the breasts and abdomen completely covered.

listened to her chest and lungs under her shirt, palpated her belly for a while, felt her pulses, checked eyes, ears. Pretty standard exam. But the abdomen exam is what caught my attention.

Nowadays, doctors and medical professionals are ever so modest. Now that I'm pretty open about enjoying medfet play, I get a little annoyed by this in a real setting. I preface this by saying when I've had a few doctors palpate my abdomen in some recent exams, one, they were both male, and two, they were apprehensive to "explore" or expose too much of my skin. Anthony, my husband, was with me, and he told them that it was okay to lift my shirt more. I understandable they were just riding to be respectful but, I'd prefer them to overly touchy feely to get an ACCURATE assessment and diagnosis. We even told the doctors, we're not modest but they just chuckled lol.

It's almost as if doctors are afraid of making anyone feel uncomfortable or embarrassed. I see a lot of talk about people refusing to be weighed because they don't want to be "body shamed."

Or maybe they're skittish about being accused of sexual harassment or "inappropriate touching."

I don't know how we got to this place, but I don't care for it. A yearly physical takes 20 minutes, and 15 of those are spent asking me if I feel depressed, suicidal or trapped in the wrong body. The other 5 minutes are spent "examining" a fully-clothed patient. 🙄

Palpating a woman's stomach over the gown/cloths is entirely pointless and it blows my mind that some physicians obviously do it anyways. You have to expose the entire abdomen and plant your hands flat onto the abdominal wall. Any fabric between the hands and the abdomen works like a tactile filter that distorts the palpatory findings. You can only check for the non-subtle factors like softness and non-tenderness, but I doubt you can even feel the liver correctly through the gown. Ridiculous!
