I really, really hate gowns since I feel that the entire concept is down right silly. Why go to a doctor with the intent of receiving a thorough physical exam and then arbitrarily cover up parts of your body to make that exam more difficult?
I could see if you were going to be hospitalized for hours and hours, or where people are coming & going in & out of the exam room throughout a lengthy procedure. Then it sounds reasonable. But for an exam that only lasts how long, i too think it's ridiculous.
Of course I was used to being only in briefs for many years before that modesty kick in the 90's started up. For me, it made no sense that the same doc I would see annually while wearing nothing but briefs, i was now going to wear a gown for? So i never bothered putting it on then. I'm figuring "We're both guys", I'm topless a large percentage of the time i'm outside of work, I have no hang ups about modesty, & it's not like i was asked to remove my underwear for the whole exam.
I've never had Healthy44's experience of ever being asked if I would like a gown or not.
The context of the option is for a skin exam, where it's a doctor I see every 6 months, and by now, used to examining me without a gown. For both of us, it's become a comfortable relationship, and it's not like we're strangers. She's not going to be able to examine my skin if it's covered. If she made it a point to inspect the skin on my genitals each time, perhaps I would be asked to wear a gown to preserve a sense of modesty/decency, given the opposite gender thing.
I would say once you'd had the same doc for a while &/or voiced any comments about the necessity of having to wear a gown, then would be the time it may become optional.
