I was told that all 4 of my wisdom teeth needed to be removed - when I was about 20 or so.
Reason: They were all growing at an angle, into my gums.
At the time, I ignored the advice and didn't have any problems until I was about 50.
Meanwhile, one of my wisdom teeth just broke away in parts - painlessly - leaving only the root inside.
Eventually the gum covered the area.
Then another tooth began to break.
This time my dentist noticed it and insisted that it be removed.
I agreed - my dentist is quite sexy, by the way!
She gave me two injections in my gum and removed the tooth.
The first injection hurt a bit, but the I didnt feel the second one.
I felt nothing when she removed the tooth.
Interestingly, she did not use what looked like electrical pliers to remove the tooth.
Instead, she used a single thin metal stick which had a flat top.
Using my gum as a pivot, she sort of scooped the tooth out.
Now, I have to find the time to get the other two out...
