Just yesterday when my community nurses came to do my IVs , physio etc they had a student nurse with them. She was so nervous , quiet and shy.
At 2pm she just watched what the nurse did and asked questions . She said she was squeamish at giving injections but hoped that once she'd given her first one she would be fine.
When she came back at 8pm I was asked if she could carry out some of the obs . So she carried out the rectal temp , inserted the fever reducing supps and did my blood pressure , oxygen saturations etc. She also had a quick listen with the stethoscope.
My usual nurse then asked her if she wanted to give my IM anti sickness injection . I was asked if I minded . To which I replied " of course not "
So she very nervously carried out her first real IM injection .
She was shaking . I told her to relax . She said she was so worried about hurting me . I told her I've had around 300 of the damned things since March and that they don't even twinge slightly anymore , so don't worry about that . So she rubbed my bum cheek with a steri wipe and just went for it.
She was very happy that she'd carried out her first real IM injection and I was happy for her.
This morning she was under supervision whilst checking the IVs .
I don't have an issue with this . They've got to learn somehow.
