Was bare bottom spanking really that common?

I'm from the UK and was brought up in the 60s and yes in my house spanking was used and often. My mum brought us up so she was the spanker. I could get away with things for so long then that was it over her knee bare bottom upwards.

It seemed the older I got the more spankings I got.

Very common. Grew up in 60s and 70s. Of all the kids I knew, there was one girl whose parents didn't spank, and they were both psychologists. Otherwise, spanking was taken as the fact of life it was.

Getting it "on the bare", or "pants down", was a qualifier, meaning not all spankings were bare bottom, but it was incredibly common that they were. Maybe not as often in public, but certainly at home.

My parents would give me "warning smacks" which could be as many as 10 swats on the seat of my pants or shorts. But if I was getting "punished", it was pants and underwear, or pyjamas, right down; and over the knee, or when older, over the desk. My Dad used to comment on how red I was getting, "nice and pink, boy, but you need some more color."

The surveys that try to determine the percentage of parents who spank never seem to ask whether they spank on the bare. But the whole time I was growing up as soon as you heard about someone getting a spanking or a friend told you that they got spanked your first question was "was it on the bare?" or "did they get it on the bare butt?"

I grew up in the 80's and got spanked over clothes and on the bare butt when I was younger, but just over clothes when I got older. Almost everyone I knew got spanked on the bare at one time or another. One friend's mom spanked him often when we were friends from age 9 to 11 and he told me she always spanked on the bare butt. Quite a few still got it that way from 12-14 or so. I also knew a couple people who still got bare butt spankings when they were 15. Definitely not a rare thing, but not something you wanted to broadcast either.

Lukkas, your experience typifies the attitudes that were so prevalent in the past; certainly in the UK and the USA as well, I suspect, elsewhere! Often when a kid was getting a spanking in public the adulits present would show their approval and support for the punishment often culminating in an enthusiastic round of applause when it was at an end! In contrast the kids would look very uncomfortable, no doubt empathizing with the child/teenager getting their behind blistered since they invariably knew, from bitter experience, just how much spankings HURT! Also they were only to well aware that their own parents might decide that they could use a good spanking themselves, remembering perhaps a recent minor misdemeanor; or deeming it the case that their own child had not sufficiently 'minded' enough lately! It was always interesting to compare and contrast the different attitudes, facial expressions and reactions of adults and children/teenagers! Any kid who had a big smile on their face was, for sure, not subjected to spankings themselves!

It is interesting that you grew up during the same years that I did, Dustin! And that, as you say, spanking 'was taken as a fact of life' back in those days! My Aunt Rose would often make comment concerning the progress of my spanking; and the concomitant state of my bottom, as well!

A side from one instance in the US when a drunken lout of a father, a co-worker of my father whom he had to be on good terms with, thrashed and beat his son in our hearing. It was pitiful to hear and showed what a p.o.s the guy was.

But aside from that I never witnessed anyone getting spanked in public when I was young or in my 20s or even 30s. I have the impression that was thought to be vulgar and low-class behavior on the part of parents. Perhaps punish at home, but never in public. Talking about Belgium here.

But once, in a somewhat comical instance, we were with our foster son in Granada Spain in the square in front of the cathedral. He was then around 5, almost 6. Anyway, he was a bit fretful and my wife started to admonish or chastise him in some way. Not spanking, but maybe talking disapprovingly in a loud voice or manner, maybe dragging him forth. Something like that.

Then an old Spanish lady, a grandmother looking type clad all in black went up to my wife and read her a riot act in Spanish, wagging her finger angrily at my wife and patting our son on the head and giving him a big smile. My wife turned red and I started laughing because I did find her at times too needlessly strict on trivial matters. Our son grinned a huge wide smile while we walked away, with the Spanish lady reading my wife a Spanish version of the good parenting riot act and giving my wife the evil eye.

I thought it hilarious actually.

And I conclude from that that kids are probably not spanked in public in Spain. And for all that, they are very well behaved and polite in my decades of experience in Spain.

I was spanked on my bare buttocks until I was 15. During my childhood, at the turn of the 1970s and 1980s, it was quite common and approved in my country. I had never witnessed a friend being spanked then. But their stories showed that they were hit on their bare buttocks.

At that time, many homes had a rule that children should not be ashamed of their nakedness in front of their parents. The child had to bare his buttocks for corporal punishment. As a teenager (12-15 years old), I really didn't like it.

I think there was something more besides these arguments. Exposing the child's buttocks is a way of subduing him. The punishment is not only painful, but also humiliating. It is even more humiliating when a child does not see its parents naked.

This was just one of the reasons. The second reason was that when administering the penalty, he could see the effects of the blows. However, I think that another reason was that punishment on bare buttocks is more humiliating. A child or teenager who is spanked on his bare bottom cannot feel like a hero. I feel like a little kid and the punishment is not only painful, but also shameful.

I never got spanked by either parent. They used other means as punishment.

As I'm born in the mid sixties, spanking could have been going on until the late seventies, but I was lucky that it didn't happen to me.

Neither I have friends who really got spanked (as far as I know and as far as they told me ofcourse)

I think one of the reasons it didn't happen is that my parents didn't have it either done to them, so there was not habit of doing it.

While deservedly getting several hairbrushes broken across my clothed ass by my mother, my father always took the pants down approach. Almost always, and for no apparent reason, he would take me into the barn or woods to cane my bare ass until it welted. It’s taken me fifty years to figure out he was getting off on it.

I never spanked/hit my own kids. I broke that cruel cycle.

It was common to the best of my knowledge either growing up in the 90s. Spanking in general, in school and out, just not bare bottom. I had a friend tell me one time he had to pull his pants down but not his underwear. I was spanked bare bottom one time at 12 yo but that was it.

I was never spanked bare bottom and my children were not either.

However, as someone who enjoys giving and taking enemas, I throughly enjoy spanking my enemates’ bare bottoms.

In college I dated an older woman, a nurse who gave me enemas and taught me to administer enemas to her and her bi-nurse girlfriend.

I was raised in former Soviet Union. In 70s spanking was common method of disciplining by parents, mainly by dads. And of course if it came to spanking it was almost exclusively bare bottom. I grew up the suburbs of Boston in the 1960s and I believe it was. My parents always took my pants down for a spanking. More often then not it was private, but on a few occasions it happened in a public setting. My neighborhood had lots of kids in my age category and I was friends with a quite a few kids and I know they got bare bottom spankings based on casual conversations amongst us. Also, in junior high, you would sometime see another guy in guy class who had been spanked either before school or the previous day in the showers and you could tell he was spanked. We all would snicker but we knew it was a reality that could happen to us. My parents either took them down for me or told me take them down. It was very common growing up. If you were going to get spanked it also didn’t matter to the parent who was around. Kid’s modesty was never a priority.

I got many bare bottom spankings growing up and as I've mentioned previously in this thread some were very much in public. I was spanked for my misdeeds. I don't remember any being bare bottom. But had I done something perceived as "really bad" I would guess the pants and undies would have come down. To better get the point across, "Don't you do that again!".

Certainly in my youth bare bottom with everything on show was the norm. Various reasons for this, modesty wasn't a thing for kids, humiliation and shame was considered an effective punishment and childhood lasted much longer, I was still in short trousers at 14/15 and playing with toys. When I think back to some of my spankings its impossible to comprehend in modern society. That you would take down the shorts and underpants of a 12 year old boy whose ball had damaged some plants and make him stand in front of our neighbours to apologise and then allow the elderly neighbour to spank my bare bottom over the knee. The shame was terrible but the flip side is that I was very well behaved, polite and respectful of adults.

In some more conservative, rural parts of the US it was not uncommon whatsoever and in fact encouraged by the community, church, etc. Unfortunately I speak from experience.
