Have you ever had a glycerin suppository not work?

So I’ve got an actual medical question. What should you do if a glycerin suppository has no effect? Is that something you should be worried about? Idk I’m really embarrassed to have to actually talk to someone I know about this, so I figured this was a good of place as any to get advice.

it may take more than 30 minutes for a glycerin suppository to work. Give it some time to see if it takes effect and reinsert if necessary: If you’ve waited and still haven’t experienced relief, you can try inserting another glycerin suppository, but make sure not to exceed the recommended dosage 😉

@regsy The pharmacist will tell yo use 1 Glycerin suppository a day. If not enough, you can increase the dose to 2 Glycerin suppositories but personally I believe they are safe and can be used many times a day. Just be patient! after inserting the suppository you mostly will get urge to defecate in 5 or 10 mins resist that urge for as long as you can. The suppository has to melt to soften the stool. I suggest to wait at least half an hour otherwise if you go to respond to that urge, the suppository will be thrown out partly melted and have to start all over again 😉

When I was a young boy I would hold off going and that became a big problem and I got backed up bad. My parents and doctor tried a suppository and it did nothing to make me go. All that happened is my butt burned and a bit of liquid oil came out. The only way to make me go was an enema with a bag to flush me out. Even the store bought fleet enemas had little effect on me. I needed the bag and that always worked to get it all moving...

Glycerine suppositories come in different strengths. The very mild ones here in Germany only contain 1mg of glycerine which is seldom effective. So I take two of those right after each other, or in just get the 3mg glycerin suppositories. I find 2mg work mostly for me. The 3mg ones always work but are quite intense with loads of cramping and urgency to go.

I have been given and retained multiple suppositories before breakfast and waited all day for a lame bowel movement to happen . In severe constipation or obstipation glycerine may not be effective and if it doesn’t work you may need an oral laxative to jumpstart the system in order for glycerine to work. These days I am given medication 1 hour before each meal that guarantees I go .

Glycerin sups don't do much for me. It usually takes hours. The liquid ones are almost immediate though.

Sometimes I will add a quarter cup to a soapy enemy. That's very hard to resist.

I find the same response as Public Enema. However, those mini fleet liquid glycerine suppositories work VERY fast! My hole will spasm for some time afterwords..

I have had a few given over the years. It usually ended up to a trip to the bathroom and no results. That meant the big red bag of soapy water.

I've never had a single suppository not work. Usually between 15 and 30 minutes and I'm on the john taking care of business. On rare occasions as much as an hour elapses before the urge to go hits me.

Generally speaking, a reason it might not work is that you haven't had enough water. The glycerin works by absorbing more water into the intestines, so inadequate hydration could be the cause.

If a suppository failed, I might try another one, but I'd most likely eat 10-12 prunes with a couple glasses of water. Prunes and water work just as well, maybe even better and faster than MoM.

Edited to add: Insert the suppository as far into the rectum as possible for best effect.

As for the suppositories, to be effective I suggest you slide two as far up your bottom as you can. On occasion I've taken/given three but that's generally because I'm looking for a speedier result not that the extra glycerine is actually needed to get things going.

My experience is that some people have a fast and urgent reaction. One suppository in place for five minutes has the gut writhing in peristaltic action as if it was dealing with two quarts of warm suds. Others can have two, deep in, and need 30 minutes before they start to feel the urge.

IF after 30 minutes with two in place you don't feel the need to expel the next line of getting action going is using a Fleet type enema. As with suppositories when in a rush I've taken/given two, one right on top of the other. One should do the trick though. I'd not suggest keeping them in the fridge, but if you popped the bottle in for five minutes or so and then injected quickly, squeeze the bottle fast and hard, then the shock to your gut, as well as the chemical reaction about to happen will, I predict, produce a very satisfactory result.

IF the chemical enema doesn't give you the result you're looking for then you'll need to get out the trusty enema bag, lather up a bar of ivory soap and inject between a quart and two quarts up where the sun don't shine. Hold until your eyes are popping and then, like a rocket fired into orbit, let it blast.

In all of the above if you can find someone to administer the suppositories and the chemical enema OTK and the suds in a knee chest position, bottom up, chest down, you'll be glad of the help.

Some people they just do not work on. For instance, my sister and I they just do not work on. The same girl who started me on enemas put ten to twelve in me because the first two did not do anything but melt. I told her that I liked the cold feeling and she sort of dared me and kept pushing them in. They had been kept in the fridge. All that happened was they squirted out all melted when I went to the potty an hour or so later. My sister's girlfriend and her niece are different. You can put one in them and they are on the potty in a few minutes going.

If you really want it to work, use the liquid glycerin ones. When I do one of those, I can't hold it for even 5 minutes.

Never tried glycerin. Why not just use the regular fleet enema ??

Never had much luck with suppositories. Even when I was able to hold it, the results were not good. Just gave me cramps and made me feel uncomfortable. Always end up with the big red bag...

Glycerin suppositories usually don't work very well for me. I don't even bother anymore. If I am constipated I just reach for my trusty red bag.

I recall that episode from childhood.

I had been given a glycerin suppository in the evening and did not get the expected results before getting to sleep.

I woke up, I think I went peeing, and after I was back to my room mom walked in, asked me if I had pooped during the night, and to my negative answer she ordered me pajamas down on the side, bottom sticking out, and gave me a suppository she had brought in.

I recall the unpleasantness of receiving a suppository as I was not yet quite woken up.

@Linda_B Out of curiosity what’s the purpose of having someone give it to you over the knee? I mean far as actually making it work better. The thought of it is extremely arousing none the less. I feel like It would be the most embarrassing situation of my life , while at the same time the biggest turn on also lol. Unfortunately I don’t have anyone to assist me regardless but who knows maybe someday.

While using lots of pain killers, a suppository had no effect or relief. Eventually they tried an enema and finally had to dig out an impaction manually. Larger than a golf ball but smaller than a baseball…very hard! A doc told me it’s rare, but they had three colon dissections within three months bin the hospital due to impactions.

I only use glycerin suppositories. Insert as deeply as possible and after about 30-45 minutes I have success. I use suppositories from France that do not consist of hard fat, but of a gelatinous mass.

Bisacodyl suppositories are hell for me, so I use glycerin suppositories. I don't get cramps and there is a gentle emptying.

The glycerine suppository causes the need for defecation. It works very well if a saddle is ready to go out.

If there is nothing ready to come out, it is normal for him to bring out only himself.

Only a large enema can act higher in the colon.

Following hip replacement 2004. I had home health nurse that came by the house couple times a week .

On her first visit, she did the routine vitals check . She asked if I had any trouble with going to the bathroom.

I said yes I was having trouble with Constipation. That the stool softeners didn’t seem to be working very well.

She proceeded to checking my bandage and replacing it. Then she said if I was ok with trying a dose of Milk of magnesia and A suppository, that in most cases it would get me back on track. Reluctantly I agreed to try it. She inserted the suppository and told me I had a backup going on. She would give me a call later that day to check and see if it worked . If not she would stop back by and go the enema route. Luckily it worked it took a couple hours to fully get me going .

@clyso In English, "selle" in the sense of fecal waste (as opposed to horseback riding) translates into "stool", not "saddle".

I've had a few occasions where a glycerin suppository did not induce a bowel movement. I can only surmise that there wasn't any feces that needed to come out, or maybe the suppositories were old and had lost their effect. No big deal, except that one has to be remember and be mindful of the melted suppository that didn't get absorbed by the intestinal lining and has liquified.

I can relate to what Buttshotlover says, as I'll sometimes insert a suppository just before I start shaving thinking I'll go after I'm done. Most of the time though, that's not the case and I have to interrupt my shaving regimen for a bowel movement.

Try something else to get things moving. We have played with glycerin suppositories for fun and sometimes they do not always cause a movement. They go in and nothing happens. Not sure why, but there is no fun to be had.

When I was a kid and my Mom gave me a laxative at bedtime she expected it to work as soon as I woke up in the morning. If it didn't work she would give me a glycerin suppository to help the laxative along but would only allow it about 20 minutes to work on me. Most often it did but sometimes it didn't and she would then give me a hot soapsuds enema to clear everything out of me.
