Pediatricians that take advantage of their Power.

I sometimes wonder if my physical exams were so extensive without any regard for modesty because in just a few years we might be getting a draft physical for the Vietnam War.

I am quite sure this was considered to be an added benefit. Just like mandatory nude swimming at the YMCA was also a way of getting boys used to situations of nudity they were certain to encounter when in the military.

I grew up with expectations, helped along by scare talk from nuns in school, of being involved in what we thought would be the inevitable coming WW III. I think most of US society thought something like that was going to be inevitable back in the 1950-60s. Probably in later years as well, but by then the draft was no longer in force so there was less need to prepare youngsters being part of a drafted citizens army.

Or perhaps it was a way of preparing them for their entrance into the real world of adults and how exams were going to be from then on in the future.

Much would depend on how doctors were trained and what they were taught in med school. I would guess that in general medical training would be more or less along the same lines in medical schools.

Sort of like how American doctors seem to all have the same opinions about foreskins: as something to get rid of. This was obviously a commonly shared medical opinion that was prevalent in just about all med schools in the recent past.

And besides, I never said pediatricians were expressly trying to prepare anyone for adulthood. That's an impossible task to begin with. However many docs might think it appropriate if their, frankly quite older patients by then (18 year olds aren't really kids anymore) received some forewarning about what was in store for them when going to doctors for 'grown-ups'.

@backster many females that I attended college with told similar stories about their college entrance physical performed by their pediatrician. They said that it was much more thorough than any prior exam. Many females believed that the pediatrician took liberties with them because it was the last time they would see him. They referred to it as his going away present.

I had to pretend that I wasn't interested while they told their stories. It was very difficult for me to not become erect. They mentioned having to undress and remain undressed more than prior visits. I would hear them say that the doctor took a really good look at them while they were naked. Many thought that the doctor was trying to take a mental picture for later. It was also common to hear that the doctor played with their boobs for a while, even longer than usual. The genital exams were also more thorough. They mentioned laying down, legs spread, while the doctor poked around for what seemed like an eternity. Then without warning, the doctor would insert his fingers, which felt to many like he was fingering them. Some mentioned having to stand in front of the doctor naked while he examined them. Also, some had to bend over naked while the doctor felt their spine. They thought that the doctor wanted a good view of their butts. A few had to walk around or stand on one leg while they were naked. The doctor often blamed the exam form which the school provided for having to give such a thorough exam.

Never saw anyone called a pediatrician when I was young but I did see the doctor of our choice. He would have me naked if he felt it was necessary. Turned out his son was in first grade with me.

This got me thinking about some time I spent at a pediatric office as a student (I was going into radiology not pediatrics) back in the very early 80s. Large practice but there was this one guy that stood out. Funny thing is that it struck me much later as to how oddly he went about things. I wouldn't say he was extremely different from one patient to another but he definitely fit the misuse of power description. Age range was a factor...especially with the 12-15 age group he gave them zero consideration for modesty or concern for causing them discomfort. Whether intentional or not the parent always had a very clear view. I think he definitely used embarrassment, humiliation, whatever you want to call it as a form of control. Not sure if it was worse for boys or girls but they all just laid there trying to disassociate. Beyond the yearly physicals with that age group he found plenty of reasons to go above and beyond routine, which was already over the top as far as how he went about things. Everything he did you could say was legitimate, but it was the excessive and odd methods that stood out. Hard to tell if he simply had no concern for their modesty and attention to discomfort or if he went a little too far on purpose. Another convenient coincidence was related to the number of exam rooms with gynecological tables, there weren't that many, and due to logistics they would be used for routine physicals. Outside of problem or birth control visits...and I'll this word again...it was rather "convenient" that he would often determine during a routine physical in these rooms that a more invasive exam was needed.

Thinking back to all the specifics I think in today's times you would consider it borderline abusive.

I was abused by some doctors. By this I mean that these doctors have exercised their power. And have greatly exceeded the medical focus. That wasn't a pediatrician for me.

The first doctor (at the age of 9) has been looking below the belt for too long. The same doctor then again when I was 11 years old and I got an erection. He then viciously documented my phimosis.

At the age of 16, the doctor performed a complete naked examination, while others were not medical professionals. This is not normal either.

When I was 17 years old, two doctors in the clinic meant me particularly well because of my phimosis and showed me naked several times and examined me intensively in the genital area. After that, I was referred to the urology department for a stretching exercise of the foreskin, where I was also examined by doctors too often downstairs.

After the circumcision at the age of 18, only one surgeon (but I was already 23 years old) examined me very thoroughly because of the groin (hernia) and touched my testicles too often and for too long.

That was also abnormal.

There are many such examples where doctors have exercised their power.

I definitely believe this to be the case. I think some doctors push the limits and definitely enjoy exposing their patients. To this day I can’t understand the countless pediatrician visits outside of annual physical exams that I endured whether for allergies, colds, injury, etc… where the doctor took it upon herself to have me lay back on the exam table quickly palpate my lower abdomen and proceed to pull my pants and underwear down to visually and or physically examine my penis and testicles. She never gave an explanation as to why she needed to see/touch my privates. My parents were almost always in the room when she did it and it was always very nonchalant. Often she would be diverting attention everyone’s attention by discussing an unrelated subject and quickly pull open my waistband and then proceed to pull everything down.

Here, doctors have been on of the most honest professions. Perhaps, due to scarcity of genital exam that they can't really abuse their power.

Teachers and military trainers, on the other hand, were known to conduct their own not-so-authorized exams on their students/subordinates.

@PeterDrude - you mentioned non medical professionals in your exam when you were sixteen. I agree this was unprofessional. Was it family members, other patients waiting, building staff? Just curious.

I believe this can be true as well especially at a final pediatrician visit. This happened to my best friends girlfriend (who I was also friends with). She had just turned 18 and was a beautiful Indian girl who probably weighed 99lbs with a double D boobs. They were twice the size of her waist! She also had a super cute face. She went to her pediatrician, a mid 60s overweight guy who she had seen before. She said he always took a peek at her genitals, but nothing more. For her last visit at 18 (without warning) he gave her a full gyno exam including fingers in both the vagina and rectum. To me the coup de gras was without complaining of any abdominal or rectal issues, she said he had her get up on all fours (doggy style) out of the stirrups and he put a metal thing up her ass until she cried, I later learned that was a protoscope, but I don’t see any reason why a healthy 18-year-old girl would need a Protoscope up the butt. She said her typical genital exam was 30 seconds and this one was at least 10 minutes. Sure that Dr got his moneys worth. I’ve jerked off many times thinking about his fingers in her tight little bum hole.

This is a very hard question to answer for me. in my opinion, i have reached a great degree of peace with the experiences i had as a child. do i think they were fair? not really. i have a hard time talking to friends about it, because honestly i wonder if any of them had the same experiences, and it can be very awkward to have that discussion. but there was a time when i truly hated my childhood doctor. i guess i just try to find the silver lining, which is that even though it wasn't fair, and i was angry, confused, embarassed... it was also quite euphoric, exciting, thrilling, and felt very very good, as i think all of us here can agree on. i don't think there's any one right way to process our experiences as a child, and whether the doctors knew that this would have such a huge impact on us, i'm not sure. for me, the abdominal exam was always dreaded and always seemed to happen unneccesarily, for it would always lead below my pantline and i would squirm quite a bit being palpated around my pubic area, the doctor's hands brushing against my penis and eventually examining it. it made me feel quite helpless, but i also couldn't help but feel enjoyment from it as it was unlike anything i would feel anywhere else in my life. my fear was blended with excitement, which was EXTREMELY confusing for me at a young age. but a lot of people go through a lot worse, and at this point, playing doctor sounds very fun as i can have that same experience and it can be very enjoyable and beautiful! i have so many questions that i wish i could ask my childhood doctor, but i guess i'm glad that he shared an experience with me that has made me unique and will hopefully lead me to meeting like minded people with the same stories and questions. and hopefully have some beautiful, innocent, fun, and light hearted experiences. after all, there is nothing wrong with us for what we like to do and how we like to play... much love.

Clearly, this was crossing boundaries. Because as I understand it, strangers do not have to look for people in investigations. In addition to the doctor, I also had the nurse, the director of the teaching profession and the sports teacher. And I think for those people, that was absolutely "curiosity" and the opportunity to see a teenager naked. Later, at my presentation at a symposium with doctors, they were already medical staff. Who then feasted on a young body. There is no other way to describe it.

There was a pediatrician who definitely took advantage of his power and in retrospect I know he enjoyed it. He was the only pediatrician for 50 miles and all the parents took their children and teenagers there. There was a double standard of allowing the females more privacy but males were given zero privacy. I was fourteen and he invited my mother and my aunt (whose children had already been examined) into the examination room stating the law required a parent or legal guardian to be present. I was a typical teenage boy in puberty dealing with acne, my voice changing and the experience was very embarrassing to me. If it was one parent only it would have been okay. He would ask me to take off all my clothes through out the exam and when he noticed my height and weight weren’t recorded ( this was planned) he called in his nurse and left the door open. There was one female classmate who sat next to me who accidentally walked in and then ran out. His nurse worked the summer months at the clinic and during school months she was a teacher and happened to be my home room teacher. She would always greet me by name and mention I would be in her class next semester. Having my height and weight taken naked in front of my mother, aunt and nurse who was also my teacher with the door open was daunting. I had to get on all fours for a visual rectal exam and when he examined my penis he would comment to my mother and aunt. Other students told me similar experiences. The doctor seemed to enjoy his power of placing teenage boys in these situations to humiliate them. When I heard he had retired I was thankful.

It shows I think that many pediatrician use double Standard in their office. And they f can usually say they do it because it is necessary.

I don't think my pediatrician purposely tried to embarrass me because he was very discreet with genital exams while my brothers and/or parents were in the room. It would be done while I was laying on the table fully clothed, just putting his hands down my underwear.

But there was one aspect of his exams that seemed a bit unprofessional/excessive. He really took his sweat time with testicular exams, and he wasn't gentle at all. As I've posted about before, I'm abnormally sensitive to having my testicles palpated. A testicular exam isn't like an abdominal exam for me, where I can force myself to submit despite the discomfort and just let the doctor work--as soon as he would touch my balls, I'd go into panic mode, squirming and unable to submit. I think part of the reason I was so distraught during testicular exams is that you're sort of trapped while the doctor is examining you there...the doctor would wrap his fingers around my entire testicle one at a time, so no matter how uncomfortable/painful it was, I couldn't pull away or squirm too much because that would make it hurt even worse. I knew that I would be trapped on the table with my most sensitive parts squeezed between the doctor's fingers until he decided I'd had enough. The testicular exams lasted probably two minutes (hard to say exactly, because at the time it felt like an eternity). For part of this time, he wasn't even palpating--he would just hold me by one or both testicles, squeezing with just enough pressure that it was uncomfortable, and asking me questions about school and whatnot. I'd try to answer his questions in a quaky voice (how embarrassing), while thinking "hurry up already!". It felt like he was prolonging the experience unnecessarily, because he wasn't actually palpating or examining me, just gripping my testicles. However, I may be misinterpreting. Again, I was abnormally sensitive to having my genitals touched; maybe most boys might not have been bothered by what he was doing. Or maybe he was doing these slow, protracted exams in a vain attempt to try to get me accustomed to his touch, because he could tell how uncomfortable I was with testicular exams.

I remember going to a pediatrician that I used to go to as a kid when my family moved back to town. I don't recall much of any previous visits as I was much younger when I visited the doctor. Though most doctor visits were in my underwear.

I visited the doctor by myself as I had gotten my driver's license at 16. I thought it was a standard exam by the doctor, didn't even need to be in my underwear. I did get the auscultation under my shirt and an abdominal exam with my shirt up.

It got interesting immediately after the abdominal exam when the doctor advised me it was time for the genital and hernia check and proceeded to unbuckle my belt and jeans and helped me removed by pants and underwear in a swift motion. It was a brief exam, a check of the penis and testicles while lying down and helping me stand to check for the hernia, but the spontaneity of not expecting to get undressed and the exam did manage to get me erect by the time I had to stand for the hernia check.

I didn't have a real pediatrician only our doctor. She was a friend (and still is) from mom. She supported and encouraged mom in every way.

I don't really have any memories there from before 10 years or so, but after that age. She just kept treating me like i was a little boy. I found it very humiliating when i got older. Of course mom was always present en they kept talking like i wasn't there.

As a child, my mother took me regularly to the pediatrician for a medical check-up. I had to undress for the examination - I was only in my underwear. That's why I don't see it as an expression of power from the pediatrician, but rather from my mother.

From what I’ve read, I consider myself lucky. My pediatrician was a straight guy, very kind, and never made me feel violated or uncomfortable. He checked me for a hernia, which was standard procedure. Never did I have to undress, and he never touched my butt or penis. And temperatures were only taken orally, and only if you were sick. I’ve heard many stories about children, teenagers, and even college age students, being stripped, poked and prodded, and rectal temperatures being taken. That is awful, and unnecessary. Where I grew up, most people were treated by an adult gp, by their 18th birthday, if not before. The hospital also considered 18 to be an adult.

If you are in the military and on field operations and you have rectal problems, you will be a hindrance to the rest of your unit. No special allowances or facilities can be made available for you, neither on base and certainly not in the field.

So, embarrassment aside, checking rectum and anus is important regarding fitness for service.

I have always had the same pediatrician, she was a woman and from the time I was born to the last visit (14 years old) she always examined me completely naked from beginning to end. When I was younger she told me to undress to my mother and then I did it myself. After the age of 10, obviously I was very ashamed to be seen naked by the doctor and my mother. Then she never used gloves, so she touched my penis and testicles with her bare hands even with my pubic hair.
