The pediatrician I went to always checked us in just our underwear. After being called back to the exam room, the nurse would do a quick history and vitals check then tell me to strip down to my underwear before the doctor came in.It was the same routine at the family doctor I saw through high school, down to underwear before the doctor came in. The first time I was even offered a gown was at my pre-college physical. The nurse asked if I wanted something to cover up with but since she already had me undressed I just said I was fine like that.
My doctor I went to for regular physicals, I was always in my underwear. My parents stopped going with me around 15. Most of the time, I would have to pull down my underwear for him for the hernia portion except one time with another doc.I went to another doctor in the same practice because my doc wasn’t available and for the most part the exam was the same except for the end when I had to be completely naked infront of him....def a vivid memory of mine and what happened lolMy school ones I was wearing shorts and my underwear.
Growing up, visits to the pediatrician always required me stripping to my briefs. As a teenager, my family practice doctor would make me do the same thing. Nowadays, I am instructed to put on a gown, which is very unfortunate. I definitely prefer the days of being just in underwear at the doctors.
When I had school medicals in the 70's we had to undress to vest / knickers until such time as we wore a bra . At that stage the practice was to undress to bra/ knickers, remove bra and then put blouse back on. The nurse did height and weight checks then until the doctor was ready for you. After the usual questions about general health and periods , I was told to remove my blouse and the medical continued with me topless. The doctor pulled down my knickers for a quick look at pubes. The last one was at age 16.I don't believe that these school medicals are undertaken these days.
I don't believe that these school medicals are undertaken these days. No, these medicals are a thing of the past. When I had school medicals is the 1970s and 1980s, we were required to strip to our underpants before being called in to see the doctor. Height and weight checks were done by the nurse after we had undressed. The doctor conducted the examination with us in our underpants until it came to the genital examination and inspection of our backsides, where we were required to lower our underwear. Sometimes it dropped to my ankles and I ended up stepping out of it when I turned round.
I think it is a thing of the past. One of my friends who works for a doctor said that medical corporations put too much emphasis on running patients through as quickly as possible and undressing and getting dressed takes time and ties up a room that could be used to generate more profits. Many doctors are also concerned about accusations of touching people inappropriately. These are certainly different times.
I think that it remains likely though there is probably a greater emphasis on having a parent present to observe.
For teens of today, I believe stripping to your underwear for an exam is something of the past over here. However during my own teens in the late 90s it was still standard practise to strip to underwear first and then end up completely naked towards the end of the exam.As an adult I had to strip to underwear or naked in several cases for a physical, even as recent as a couple of months ago. For this last time it was actually a bit unexpected. It did occur to me that in most cases when I had to strip the doctor was a bit older (which is my preference 😃 )
I’d like to see those doctors retired. When I was growing up from age 11 on I always had to strip to my underwear and put on a gown. Which was almost as bad as just being in my underwear as he’d be lowering the top, then raising the bottom and taking my underwear down and/or off completely during the exam. He’d usually have me completely naked before the end of the exam for certain procedures/checks.And since I grew up in a relatively small town this was also usually done without any other adults in the room. Not that it felt any better having a male or female nurse in the room watching the few times he’d do that. I wish I knew back then what I know now.
One of my friends who works for a doctor said that medical corporations put too much emphasis on running patients through as quickly as possible and undressing and getting dressed takes time and ties up a room that could be used to generate more profits.Based on my own observations, I think the argument that undressing and re-dressing takes too much time is total crap.Just about every doctor's office that I've been in has more exam rooms than medical providers (doctors, NP, etc). And it's the nurse that takes you back to the exam room that typically orders you to undress. Therefore, the actual medical provider isn't wasting any time waiting for you to undress or re-dress. That part of your exam is outside of the valuable time that they're spending with you.And the reality is that it will actually take less of the provider's time to examine a patient if they are already fully undressed. Any small amount of time wasted while they move your clothing out of the way is avoided. Not having the patient undress because it takes too much time is total nonsense. They do that for other reasons, most likely the current trend toward overly-modest patients.
Don't know about now, but when I went to the docs as a kid in the 90s in Scotland they would have me strip down to my underwear to examine me in front of my mother and big brother.
I imagine that some younger doctors could still perform thorough physicals if they wanted to. It's not like they are a different species of humans that is totally incapable of doing so.
Had a “physical” with a new doc a couple months ago but it was just more of the same. Fully dressed and masked throughout it. No genital check or lifting any clothes. Stethed over the shirt. The only positive was she did the abdominal massage thingy while listening to my guts.
No, it is still quite common. Older doctors tend to have patients stripped to underwear from the start.

My brother takes his male childern (my nephews) to the doctor (they are 9 and 11) and the nurse says ‘have them change out of their clothes into this gown, open in the back’ and they get weighted and examined in the gown. However the doctor still does the genital exam the same way as before but lifting the gown up instead of pulling down their underpants.
No I was always in my undies at my pediatrician, up until the genital and rectal exam when he removed them and took them away and kept them for the rest of the appointment.
I am in my mid 60's, having had many physicals for sports in HS then my pre military physical. Those were the last times I was bare assed in a Dr.'s office. Even my GI only requires me bare assed for a colonoscopy. Sorry folks, I think those days are in the past. Way too many Drs are afraid of abuse charges, so they leave their parients clothed.
I think for full physicals but not for general check ups !Too many patients too little time !I think those type of doctors have retired now. Most Pediatricians I think are real quick with female teen examinations.
Growing up as a military kid I never had a consistent doctor or exam experience. Everyone did it differently … but never completely naked for any length of time. Lots of different ways to do the genital and hernia checks. Never looked at the rear side. and I never remember a gown. I don’t know those existed until I was an adult
I have always got to remain clothed or been given a gown. I would love to have go thru a physical in just my underwear, or even better I would like to have to be naked for the entire exam.
This is one of my most interesting topics in this group; I've discussed it before and I can't hear or talk about it enough. From my first physical i remember at 5 years old until I got married at 21 (probably only half a dozen exams), I was told to strip down to my underpants and have a seat on the exam table. No gowns were offered. The approximate time frame for that 16 year period was 1973 to 1989. The doctor (also male) would perform the exam and towards the end he would tell me to stand up. He would sit in a chair and have my face him. He would then instruct me to lower my underpants and I would let them fall to my ankles. He would perform the hernia check and generally inspect my cock and scrotum. That would be the end of the exam ( no rectal exam) and I would pull my underpants up and get dressed.Once I got married, I changed doctors and she would tell me to get completely undressed and put on a paper gown. (From about 1989 until present) I can not tie it so it stays open and it is usually fully removed in the first 5 minutes so she does the whole exam with me in the nude which I thoroughly enjoy.
When I was a kid the pediatrician always had me strip down to my underwear. I wish more doctors still did that for adults. I don't go to the doctors very much but the ones I have gone to as an adult have never had me undress at all.
So I will tell you about a physical exam I had just 2 weeks before covid started. So I went to see a new doctor and have a physical exam. So they call me back and have me take my shoes and socks off and they weigh me and take my height. Then they take me into a room and ask me questions and more questions than usual since I'm a new patient and then they take my blood pressure which was high because I was nervous and they take my temperature (orally). And then they had me strip down to my underwear and put on a gown. I had asked my friends before if doctors still did that and they all told me no but now I was there and I had to strip. So I took off my clothes and put on the gown. And then the doctor walks in and introduces himself and has me sit on the table. So he starts by looking in my ears and my eyes and my nose. Then he takes a tongue depressor and tells me to say ahh and I have a bad gag reflex so I gagged. Then he dropped the gown down to my waist and did a skin exam. And then he listened to my lungs and my heart and then he had me lay back and he listened to my belly and felt my belly and he did this for a pretty long time and then he told me to breathe in so he could feel my kidneys and then he took the gown away completely and looked at my legs and my toes and then had me stand up and bend over so he could look at my spine and then I had to get dressed in front of him but he never looked at my genitals or my butt and then I went again a year later and he only had me take off my shirt and it was a very underwhelming exam but to this day I've only had my genitals looked at once and it was when I went for the military.
At the pediatrician growing up and now at my new doctor I am asked to strip down to my boxers by the nurse when she leaves the room at the beginning before the doctor comes in. I have never been asked or given a gown before but I know some people have. It's always embarrassing sitting on the table in just my boxers and I used to get a little anxious at my pediatrician. I am in my boxers for the majority of the exam until the genital check. Growing up at my pediatrician he would usually pull them down to mid-thigh for the exam while I was lying down. Now my doctor lifts them up and back while I am lying down and feels around and then after I stand up for a more thorough exam of everything down there and he asks me to lower them to my knees.
