Getting Aroused by Reading Medical Textbooks

Has anyone every sought out medical textbooks or research in a college library? Soon after my embarrassing exams at 15 and 16, I started checking out books in my college library. Three research reports had me raging hard in the aisles of the library while reading the texts. One was "Somatic Development of Adolescent Boys." and the other was Frank K. Shuttleworth's "The Adolescent Period: A Pictorial Atlas" I have both of these digitized now (and fairly easy and legal to get online), as well as a few other texts.

"Setting the Lawn on Fire," a narrative book by Mack Freedman, chronicles his fascination with the college library and drooling over the medical photos and texts describing the clinical aspects of a full clinical examination.

Any other stories, books, or clinical reports that people have read and want to share?

Another hot clinical read is "PHYSICAL CHANGES ASSOCIATED WITH ADOLESCENCE IN BOYS" by Earle Reynolds and Janet Vines.

I always rather liked reading biology books like that for that reason. I don't remember any that I've read though.

I was lucky enough to have a father who was a doctor. I had free access to his medical library at home. Some exciting stuff there, especially the photos involved with Tanner staging. That and his obstetrics textbooks.

I got into healthcare professionally and studied extensively, even beyond my area of expertise.

Now that I'm older and have health issues, I always research the hell out of my issues and my upcoming procedures.

From what I remember, I believe it was my sister's textbooks from school (she's currently a nurse and was training for it when I was younger), and I think that's how I even figured out what a penis is called.

Yes... I studied as much sexual-related medicine as my real subjects in the University library. I wonder if they noticed the missing pages about medical restraints, historical examination implements and procedures.

I like reading medical text on net. Watching medical videos...reading medical theme based stories. Whether fetish or real. I think that's what brought me to this website

Thinking back to my adolescent years, my parents had a huge home medical book that was probably late 1930s or early 1940s printing. It was replete with illustrations of douche and enema gear; as well as descriptions of every medical proceedure imaginable for the time, with pages and pages of graphic illustations all in the name of better health at home. I'm certain that many hours of reading from that book contributed much to my current medical fetish.

I have looked at this huge book - I guess, that during these assessments the adolescence boys were instructed to disrobe completely and had to undergo various measurments and tests completely nude. To protect their personality their faces had been "overpainted"!

I also wonder, during how many "sessions" they had to remain in the hospitals, beeing Xrayed, pocked everywhere, photographed etc. etc.

I also had a parent with a medical education and so there was a library of medical textbooks from the 1930s at home. When I was in college and working in hospitals (especially in the operating room) to make money, many of the docs would lend me books so I would have a grasp of the procedures and the relevant anatomy. Occasionally, one of the docs would gift me with a book and those are still treasured possessions in my library.

Those books and my working at the hospital definitely sparked my interest in this group.

Yes, in college. I sought out and found books on physical examination. But the Kinsey reports -- the male one in particular -- was fascinating and enlightening for this small-town kid who had no idea! I knew I wasn't alone -- not just from the Kinsey study itself, but from the signs that the really "compelling" pages had been read over and over and over.

Absolutely. I used to love scouring public library and later college library for medical books. We had one Red Cross book at home that I remember looking at a lot. I think that must be where I found out what an enema was (never experienced one). I also quietly checked out medical texts at friends' houses (eg if a parent was a doctor). The physical exam texts that I found in college definitely helped me in my play exam skills.

As a kid, my mom had a book about birth control that discussed vaginal douching. That was back when I understood what a fountain syringe was for because she used it on me for enemas. The vagina was a new concept so I learned a lot. There were many diagrams showing the vagina, a penis inserted in one along with diaphrams and condoms depicted and a nozzle inserted. The drawing of a hand holding a douche nozzle in the vagina was pretty cool. I think it made me well informed on the topic and women's anatomy.

When I was around 11-12, I found an old 1914 medical self-help book that was nicely illustrated with many line drawings. It was in my grandfather's library and thinking back on it, I'm fairly certain he or his family bought it after war broke out in August 1914 and they went to London as refugees. It was small in size and called 'the Pocket Doctor' and gave information and advice about medical procedures and home treatments.

The book had quite explicit illustrations that fascinated me beyond words - enemas, bladder stone removal, things like that. It sounds silly to say so, but finding and taking and keeping that little book was very decisive in how I developed my interests later. Maybe you could say at some other point the same would have happened, but if so, I'd have had to wait many more years until I was an adult before I knew how to find more of such medically illustrated books.

I've been known to hang out in college libraries reading about male exams in the textbooks. Been years since I've done so, though.

Through various jobs and schools, I've had access to texts for years. I love the stuff that's male specific. The trouble is getting excited in the library.

Don't forget the infamous University posture pictures of the 50s and 60s

Actually, such kind of photos and drawings in (pseudo) scientific books were published much earlier than that. I can't say where the tradition started, in France or Germany, though given German obsession with race and ethnicity I tend to go that way. In any case, I have a number of old books on these subjects. All are German publications, with translations into Dutch for one or two. Most were pre-Great War publications, from the late 1890s or 1900s, though I suppose there were older as well, though less profusely illustrated due to technological constraints. Interestingly, I've even come across advertisements for such books in Germany during the Great War itself, when you'd think people had other concerns to think about and other things to spend money on.

But then again maybe not that surprising as such books were aimed at the wealthier segment of society, at intellectuals and academics, lawyers, judges and so on. I've often thought of them as rich men's pornography in that their contents contained a large number of nudes in photo and line drawings, but it was supposed to be an academic interest. Or so the rationalization went I suppose. Whatever ... ha ha.

Some of these books went through dozens and dozens of print runs over the years and the publishing firms and authors that specialized in this sub-genre of academic pornography brought out dozens of similar titles, all on the subject of comparative ethnicity, bodily proportions, female beauty (often on an ethnic basis), childbearing and so on ... fascinating stuff actually. These books probably fulfilled a similar purpose as the old National Geographic Magazine when it published photos of topless or even nude 'natives' living then in colonial Africa or the South Seas, or when Nat. Geo. published paintings recreating scenes from life from Antiquity showing slave markets, fertility rites, gymnastics training and so on ...

Eadweard Muybridge was an early photographer who developed a method to study movement by serial photography in the later 1800s. He's the one who proved that a running horse has all 4 feet off the ground while running. He also did motion studies with naked humans. His study of two boys playing hopscotch is very interesting.

When I was in my teens, I remember going to the library and looking at human anatomy and adolescent development books. i never checked any out of the library to take them home with me -- I wouldn't want anyone to know that I was looking at material like that. But I'd enjoy flipping through the books in some dark corner of the library, enjoying the photos and descriptions of males as well as females.

I loved the Tanner staging photos of nude boys and girls taken as they matured with the black bar over their eyes. Come to think about it, I still do. I like to imagine myself posing for the pictures.

Exactly! To be clear, it's not a pervy kind of thing where you're lusting at naked pictures of children. It's you putting yourself in that situation and imagining that it was you who was being forced to pose for the photos.

Those black bars are classic for newspaper or magazine sleaze ... put a black bar over any random face and they immediately look like a cross between a mob hit man and a child molester ... it's almost as good as covering your face with your hat as you walk up the courthouse stairs flanked by police ... classic Weegee ... ha ha.

I have always been fascinated by medical textbooks ever since I was around 10 or 11, when I had my first real life experience of a medical exam that I can properly remember.

I was due to be taken to the doctor's to be checked for scoliosis, and I had heard from some friends about the sort of thing this might involve, so I went to the library to try to find any books on the subject. The book I found that stuck in my mind (unfortunately can't remember the title) showed a completely naked young woman being examined for scoliosis. There were two full length pictures of her from behind, one standing and one bending over. I remember being highly aroused by this, in particular, imagining myself in that situation being examined in that way. it was a strange feeling though, as part of me really wanted it to happen, and part of me really didn't.

Anyway, the day of the doctor's visit came, and in a way you could say my dream (or nightmare) came true. I did indeed have to strip completely naked and was examined just like the woman, standing and bending over. I actually found it extremely humiliating at the time, but I am glad it happened as I am pretty sure this is what started my fascination with medical textbooks and exams.
