Will’s Thorough Check-Up

Chapter 2: In the Waiting Room

Will's mom parked the car into the parking lot of the medical clinic. Will took a deep breath as he got out, trying to calm his nerves as they made their way toward the entrance of the building.

As they approached the entrance, Will's mom glanced at him, concern etched on her face. "You doing okay?"

Will nodded, though his voice betrayed a hint of unease. "Yeah, I'm just a little nervous though."

“You'll be fine,” she responds sternly.

They entered the clinic through the automatic sliding doors, greeted by the cool, air-conditioned interior.

Will's mind was preoccupied with thoughts of his upcoming medical check-up. However, just as he stepped inside, a sudden realization struck him—he had forgotten that his "snap streaks" on Snapchat were about to expire. With a quick flick of his thumb, he opened the Snapchat app on his phone and snapped a photo of the clinic's entrance, capturing the building and the sign displaying the clinic's name. Without much thought, he sent the photo to his friends, including Stephanie, who had a liking towards Will. He added a caption to the snap, saying, "Yay not again…", extending their “snap streak” to 150 days.

Soft instrumental music played in the background, creating a serene atmosphere. Will followed his mom as they made their way toward the elevators.

They stepped into the elevator, and Will pressed the button for the second floor where the check-in desk was located. The doors closed, and the elevator began its ascent. Will tapped his foot nervously, the anticipation building within him.

As the elevator doors opened, Will and his mom stepped out onto the second floor. The hallway was lined with doors leading to various examination rooms and offices. They followed the signs directing them to the check-in area, passing by other patients sitting in the waiting area, some engrossed in magazines or scrolling through their phones.

Reaching the check-in desk, Will approached the receptionist with his health clinic card in hand. "Hi, I have an appointment for a physical. Here's my health clinic card."

“Ok great!”

The receptionist smiled and took the card, swiping it through a card reader to verify his identity. “Can you also confirm your date of birth please?”

“May 20th”

“Thank you, you’re all set! Please have a seat, and the nurse will call you shortly."

Will nodded, taking the card back from the receptionist and putting it back in his wallet. He joined his mom in the waiting area, finding a pair of empty seats. They sat down, and Will let out a sigh.

His mom leaned in, speaking softly. "I know it can be nerve-wracking, but the check-up is necessary. It's a chance to make sure you're healthy and ready for college."

As Will settled in to his seat, he felt his phone buzz and took out his phone. Stephanie had responded back his snap.

S: “Are you okay? Why are you at the doctor's?”

W: “Im good, it’s for a college physical!”

S: “Oh, gotcha! Have fun at your check-up! So, who's your doctor?”

W: “It’s Dr. Lopez.. I don’t know if you had him over here or not”

S: “No way!! Dr. Lopez is my doctor too! I'm going to see him next week for my college physical!”

W: “Ooh what no way!“

S “Ya.. Maybe we should compare notes afterwards!”

Will's heart skipped a beat as he heard the door to the reception open and the nurse call out his name.

"WILL??" the nurse called, her voice cutting through the hushed atmosphere of the waiting area.

Will's mom looked up from her seat, her eyes meeting his. "I'll be waiting here," she said, motioning for him to move forward.

"Okay, sounds good," Will replied, trying to mask his nerves. He got up, giving his mom a reassuring smile, before making his way toward the nurse who stood by the door leading to a sterile hallway.

As he walked towards the nurse, Will quickly pulled out his phone to respond to Stephanie's message.

W: "Ok, going in! I'll be back!"

S: "Good luck!"

Even though his anxiety is building, her supportive words brought a smile to Will's face as he stepped through the door.
