Will’s Thorough Check-Up

Chapter 1: It’s For Your Own Good!

Will despised physical check-ups. The cold touch of the stethoscope on his chest, the prick of the needle in his arm, the uncomfortable inquiries about his well-being, and the checking down there, they all made him cringe. The sight of white lab coats only added to his aversion.

However, like any typical Asian-American parent, his mom insisted that he needed a physical before heading off to college. She emphasized the importance of a check-up and getting his vaccinations up to date.

Will instead felt irritated and anxious. Like most guys from this generation, he was too embarrassed to get a simple check-up. He wished he could just skip the whole ordeal and hang out with his friends instead. Letting out a sigh, he gazed out the car window. His mom drove him to the appointment, humming along to an oldies station on the radio. She seemed oblivious to his mood, or perhaps she simply didn't care.

"Mom, do I really have to do this?" he asked, hoping she would reconsider.

"Yes, you do," she replied firmly. "It's not a big deal, Will. It'll be over before you know it."

"But I'm fine, Mom. I don't need a physical, and you know why." Will had been a dedicated varsity swimmer for all four years of high school and had served as captain of the swim team in his final year. He had even competed in the state championships. His resistance was justified.

"That's what you think, honey. But you never know what could be lurking inside you. You could have high blood pressure, diabetes, anemia, or something worse."

"Thanks for the vote of confidence, Mom."

"I'm just being realistic. You can't take your health for granted. You have to take care of yourself."

"I do take care of myself, Mom!"

"That's good, Will. But you still need a physical. It's part of becoming an adult. You're 18 now."

Will rolled his eyes. He didn't feel like an adult.. He wondered if college would be any different. Would he have more freedom there? Or would he still be bound by rules, schedules, and expectations? He hoped for a change. He yearned to discover his place, purpose, and passion in college. He hoped to forge new connections, make friends, and embark on new adventures. Most importantly, he hoped to have fun.

Glancing at his mom once again, he noticed her still humming, smiling, and driving. Will gazed out the window for the remainder of the drive to the doctor's office, his eyes fixated on the bustling street scene passing by. The neighborhood they were driving through was known for its vibrant Asian American community, and it was evident in the multitude of restaurants and shops lining the street. His gaze lingered on the numerous boba shops that dotted the area. He imagined the sweet, refreshing taste of his favorite boba drink and the laughter and conversations he would have with his friends at one of these places.

As the car made its way through the busy street to the doctors office, Will's mind wandered to the plans he had made with his friends. He longed to meet up with them after the doctor's appointment. He continued to observe the vibrant scene outside, eagerly anticipating the completion of his visit to the doctor's office so he could join his friends.
