In early July, I had my annual physical at the practice my wife and I use. Back in March, when I went online to make the appointment, I noticed that the practice had a new female family nurse practitioner. So I scheduled my appointment with her.On the day of the appointment, I woke up, had breakfast, shower, and drove myself to the office. I only had to wait a few minutes before being called back by a medical technician. The technician took my vital signs, and then brought me to an empty exam room.I only had to wait a few minutes before the nurse practitioner came into the room.She introduced herself, and logged into her laptop. The appointment started in the usual way, the NP asking the usual, physical type questions. When she asked, if I had any questions, I mentioned that for the last four years my physical included a skin exam, a breast exam, a testicular exam, as well having my prostate examined in the lithotomy position with my feet in the stirrups. She said she would gladly perform those exams, and would examine my prostate with me in the lithotomy position. She added that she had never examined a male patient that way.She stood up, took a blue cloth gown out of the cabinet and handed it to me. She instructed me to get undressed and put on the gown, opening in the back. She then left the room. So, I hopped off the table, undressed and put on the gown.A few minutes later, I heard a light knocking, and she reentered the room.The exam started in the usual way. She examined my ears, nose and throat. She then used her stethoscope to listen to my lungs, along with my heart.The nurse practitioner, then had me lay back on the table on my back, and she listened to and then probed my abdomen. She then had me take my arms out of the gown and lower it to my waist. She proceeded to examine the breast tissue on each side of my chest, including gently squeezing each nipple. She had me place my arms back in the gown and told me to sit up.I watched as she extended the stirrups from the exam table. She instructed me to place my heels and the stirrups and scoot towards the bottom of the table. I particularly like this part of the exam, because it makes me think of my wife doing the exact same thing at this same practice. Her physical is at the end of this week.She then took out a tube of medical lubricant and placed it on the nearby rolling cart. She looked through the cabinets, but couldn’t find gloves in her size, so excused herself from the room to get a pair of gloves. So there I was, sitting up on the table, with my feet in the stirrups, waiting for her to come back to the room with gloves. 😆A minute later, she returned to the room with gloves. I watched as she pulled on the gloves and lubricated her index finger. She then asked me to lie back. She asked me to scoot down a little more, and then she moved the gown up onto my stomach.I felt her finger at my anus. She told me to take a deep breath, exhale, and relax. As I did those things, I felt her finger sliding into me. What was different this year from previous years, was that she used her left hand to gently press on my abdomen, as her right index finger felt my prostate. I’m not sure if this was to push the prostate towards her finger or not.I know from videos when doctors do this to women, they are pressing quite firmly, but this was not the case for me.She examined my prostate for about 15 seconds, and then withdrew her finger. She had me remove my feet from the stirrups, and then asked me to roll onto my left side. Once I was on my left side, She had me bend my knees and move him slightly towards my chest. She explained that she was going to examine my prostate in this position as well. I believe she also added some lubricant to her finger. I felt her finger at my anus. She told me to relax, and then I felt her finger slide into me. She probably examined my prostate this way for another 10 to 15 seconds. And then she withdrew her finger.As she pulled off her gloves, she told me that I could sit up.As she sat down on her rolling stool, she asked me to stand in front of her. She said she was now going to examine me for a hernia, as well as testicular cancer. She had me raise my gown above my waist and spread my feet to shoulder apart. She then proceeded to give me a quick, hernia check, followed by a more thorough examination of my testicles.As she stood up and turned to wash her hands, she told me everything felt normal. After washing her hands, she told me she would refill one of my medication‘s, and that I could get dressed and check out at the front desk.
