Ashley walks down the hallway and enters exam room 3. She takes in the layout of the exam room. In the back right corner is a standard exam table, laid flat, with white table paper covering it, a flat pillow in a sanitary covering under the paper at the head end. A couple chairs are to the right of the exam table against the wall, and a small counter with a sink on the wall to the left. A couple cabinets are above the sink to the left and right, leaving a space directly above the sink. There is a paper towel dispenser above the sink, and a soap dispenser next to it. To the right of the counter, between it and the exam table is a laptop stand and a rolling stool. Next to the laptop stand on the right is a small trash can and a red biohazard bin, and a Mayo stand. To the right of the exam table on the wall is a blood pressure cuff and otoscope, and the device used to check a patient’s eyes (I don’t remember what it is called). There is a privacy curtain hanging from the ceiling between the exam table and door, currently open. On the left side of the exam room, past the counter is a scale to check height and weight.

The nurse asks Ashley’s date of birth, Ashley tells her. The nurse says “Our records indicate you are here for an employment physical. Please confirm the name of the company so we can be sure to use the proper forms.” Ashley replies “P.W. Hutchins Corporation.” The nurse says “Okay, go ahead and remove your shoes for the height and weight check. By the way, I love your shoes!” Ashley says “Thank you” and has a seat. She unties each small bow, and unwraps each ankle strap from her shiny nylon covered, slender ankles, and removes her high heels, placing them under the chair. She stands up and walks over to the scale, and steps up on it. It reads 125 pounds. The nurse then checks her height, 5 feet 8 inches tall. The nurse tells Ashley to have a seat on the exam table, and logs into the laptop, and records Ashley’s height and weight.

Ashley sits up on the exam table, making the table paper crinkle loudly. The hem of her tight, emerald green, sleeveless sheath dress rides several inches up her thighs from sitting, showing off her shiny, suntan colored nylon clad thighs, from a few inches above mid-thigh down. She crosses her legs, the bright overhead LED lights making her legs look glossy, her well toned thighs and chiseled calves well defined by the thin, shiny stockings. Her stocking tops don’t show, as the stockings go all the way to the very tops of her thighs.

The nurse takes Ashley’s vitals and logs them into the laptop, telling Ashley her vitals are excellent. The nurse logs out of the laptop and tells Ashley “The doctor and a nurse will be in shortly, you can stay seated there or on a chair if that is more comfortable for you. Have a nice day.” Ashley replies “You as well” as the nurse draws the privacy curtain closed. Ashley hears the door open and close.

Ashley decides to just stay where she is on the exam table. She is surprised that she didn’t have to undress and put on a gown. “Maybe that is a good sign this physical will just be a basic, minimal exam” she thinks to herself. Just then, with the quiet of her exam room, she can hear conversation from the exam room to her left, which is exam room 2. Ashley remembers that is the exam room her boss and mentor, Jennifer, went into. She actually recognizes Jennifer’s voice. She can’t believe she can hear them talking. It is muffled conversation, but since her exam room is so quiet, she can make out most of the words. Ashley hears a male voice, she knows it is the doctor as he is instructing Jennifer to remove her blouse and bra for a breast exam. Ashley says to herself “So much for a minimally invasive exam.” She hears the doctor instructing Jennifer to have a seat back on the table and place her hands behind her head. Ashley hears table paper crinkling, then a few moments of quiet as the doctor presumably is palpating Jennifer’s firm 36C breasts. Then Ashley hears the doctor tell Jennifer to lay back. She hears more paper crinkling and movement on the exam table, and a clanging sound, probably the doctor pulling out the table extension for Jennifer’s legs. The doctor tells Jennifer “Okay Mrs. Adams, place your hands behind your head again please.” More quiet as the doctor palpates Jennifer’s breasts again.

Ashley hears the doctor say “Okay, I am going to examine your abdomen, let me know if you feel any pain or discomfort.” A few more moments of quiet. The doctor instructs Jennifer to sit up, more paper crinkling and table movement, and the sound of the table extension being pushed back in. Then Ashley hears the doctor say “Okay Mrs. Adams, for the last part of your physical I am going to perform a full pelvic exam with a Pap test. You can put your bra and blouse back on, then undress from the waist down.” Jennifer asks “Is that really necessary? I just had a Pap and pelvic from my own doctor about 9 months ago. I’m sure they can fax or email the results to you.” The doctor replies “We are contracted with your employer to perform a full physical examination, regardless of whether your doctor has recently examined you or not. We can not deviate from the physical exam form your employer provided to us.” Jennifer replies “Well, I guess I have to, don’t I?” The doctor says “I wish your doctor could fax us the paperwork, but we have to follow your employer’s guidelines.”

Ashley’s heart sinks to her stomach. She now knows what is in store for her shortly, a complete physical examination with a breast exam, and a full pelvic exam with a Pap test. She hears Jennifer get off the exam table with table paper crinkling. A moment of quiet, Ashley is imagining poor Jennifer removing her light gray, tight fitting pencil skirt, shiny suntan nylons and panties, when Ashley hears a woman’s voice, presumably the nurse chaperoning the exam. She says “You can leave the stockings on.” Ashley thinks to herself “I guess I am not the only one that dislikes pantyhose. Jennifer is a stockings girl like me!” Her thoughts are disrupted by the doctor saying “Please have a seat back on the table.” More paper crinkling. Then Ashley hears metallic clanging sounds. She knows that sound, stirrups being pulled out! She hears the doctor say “Go ahead and lie back, and place your feet in the stirrups please.” Lots of table movement and paper crinkling, then the doctor instructing Jennifer to scoot down further. The doctor says “Okay that’s far enough, now let your knees fall open as far to the sides as you can.”

Now it is quiet for a moment. Then Ashley hears the doctor telling Jennifer each step of her pelvic exam as he performs it. First the external exam, then being told to relax for the speculum insertion. Then Ashley hears four distinct plastic clicks. She knows the doctor just opened up Jennifer’s vagina with the speculum. Jennifer is now being told she might feel some scraping or mild cramping as the Pap samples are taken. Another moment of quiet, then the doctor tells Jennifer “Okay, now for the internal bimanual exam. Try and relax Mrs. Adams.” More quiet. Then Ashley is shocked to her core by what she hears next. The doctor says “One more exam and we are done. I am going to perform a rectovaginal exam and a brief rectal exam, so I can do a complete assessment of your uterus, and check your rectum for any signs of blood.” Jennifer asks “I suppose that is mandatory per the form as well?” The doctor replies “Yes, it is on the form. Have you had a rectovaginal exam before?” Jennifer says “Well, I have given birth to two kids, so yeah.” The doctor says “Just making sure, I figured you have, but I didn’t want to assume and catch you off guard as to what that exam entails.” Jennifer says “Okay, let’s get this over with.” The doctor says “Take a deep breath and relax your bottom.” Ashley knows that Jennifer is now being probed in both her vagina and rectum simultaneously. Ashley has never had a rectovaginal or rectal exam before. She is hoping it is because Jennifer is over 40, or because she has had kids, she is praying that because she is only 25 and has never been pregnant, that the doctor will skip those parts for her. She knows she will likely get the pelvic exam, but she has a bad feeling that she will be also getting her first ever rectovaginal exam and rectal exam. She knows how a rectovaginal exam is performed, she read about it in an article about what to expect at the gynecologist in Women’s Health magazine a few years ago. She is cringing at the thought. Ashley has never had anything in her rectum before, not even a fingertip. She has wanted to explore some anal play during sex, but hasn’t actually acted on it. Ashley just now realizes just how long it has been since she last had any sex at all. At least 14 months or so! She has been so busy with work, going to classes for her Masters Degree, and the gym, dating has taken a back seat. The last guy she had sex with she met at the college she attends for her Masters program. They dated briefly and hooked up a few times, but they stopped seeing each other when he moved away at the end of the winter semester.

Ashley’s thoughts are interrupted when the doctor says “Okay Mrs. Adams, all done, you can scoot back and sit up now. The nurse will help you and give you some wet wipes to freshen up with.” More table movement and paper crinkling. The nurse says “Here is the box of wipes, you can get dressed now.” Ashley hears the crinkling of table paper as Jennifer stands up.

Ashley is crestfallen now. She knows what is in store for her. She can’t believe she heard her boss, mentor, friend getting a complete physical exam with a breast exam, full pelvic exam with a Pap test, and rectovaginal/rectal exams. She can’t help but visualize Jennifer with her feet in the stirrups, her shiny, suntan nylon covered legs wide open, the doctor examining her most private, intimate areas. A speculum and fingers penetrating her vagina, and a finger buried deep in her rectum.

Ashley hears a nurse in the hallway. She says “Okay Mr. Thompson, fourth room on the right, exam room 4. Ashley can’t believe it. Now Noah will be in the exam room next to hers! Will he be able to hear her exam with as much detail as she heard Jennifer’s exam? Will she hear Noah’s exam as well as she heard Jennifer’s?

Ashley’s racing thoughts are interrupted by a knock on her door. Ashley meekly says “Come in.” The same doctor and nurse that examined Jennifer enter the exam room and open the curtain, then close it behind them. Ashley recognizes their voices as they introduce themselves. Ashley’s heart starts beating faster, knowing she is about to be thoroughly examined…….
