An Unexpected Appointment

2. A Queasy Feeling

Today I have to get an appointment, Steven thought to himself. It had been a few days since the information came from the HR department that they had to make an appointment with the company doctor. To this day he hadn't dared to report to the company doctor's secretary. Something told him not to procrastinate any longer. At his workplace, Steven looked for the contact details of the company doctor. He still had several older messages from the secretary in his mailbox. After all, it went back and forth at the time until a joint date could finally be found. He copied out the email address, opened a new message and put it in the recipient line. Then he wrote an appointment request in one short sentence. Hesitantly, he read the short email. Now out with it, he thought, and then sent it off. Some time later a reply came back from the secretary. Steven was a little shocked and was very excited about the content. Again he felt his pulse and his heart under his clothes. The reply to this message was quite short. Steven should please give us a call to arrange an appointment. Shit, he thought to himself. If I call there now, then everyone knows what's in store for me. He glanced at his colleague. She was busy with some bills. Then her phone rang. This is the opportunity, he thought. Even as she picked up the receiver, he quickly dialed the number for the company doctor. He saw almost too late that he had a transposed digit in the number. He quickly tried again, but he didn't have time to get angry. What the heck, he said to himself and heard a dial tone. "Luhmann company medical practice, this is Lieboldt speaking, hello?" a female voice announced at the other end of the line. “Yes, good morning!” said Steven and gave his full name. Luckily, the secretary was able to put Steven in place immediately and offered him several appointments. Steven chose one and was glad that the procedure went so quickly. "Can you tell me your date of birth, please?" Mrs. Lieboldt asked. Steven hadn't expected that. The colleague had hung up in the meantime. Steven was embarrassed. Now she's guaranteed to realize what's going on, he thought. He gave his date of birth a little more quietly, hoping that his colleague wouldn't hear it. Mrs. Lieboldt wrote it down, confirmed the appointment and said goodbye. Done, thought Steven and went to work.
