An Unexpected Appointment

1. The Message

It was a working day like any other. After breakfast Steven drove off. A bit hasty, as always. But he always made time for a short breakfast with good coffee. Arriving at the office, he greeted his colleagues, took his seat and logged into the system. First see what emails there were overnight, he thought, although it was actually clear that no message could have come. But you never know. And so it was. The morning passed completely normally. A few usual phone calls, a few things to sort out, nothing special. Shortly before the lunch break, a nice colleague from the human resources department received an email. What do they want again, thought Stefan and opened the message. The first words read quickly. After the greeting, however, the colleague quickly got to the point. A company medical examination is due again, the last one was several years ago. Steven was startled. Of course he knew the intervals between the usual company medical examinations in his company, but somehow he hadn't expected this request. He was literally startled. His pulse started suddenly, he had the feeling. This one email triggered real emotions in him. He immediately remembered the first company medical examination that was announced in a similar way. At that time he had managed to delay the investigation for two months. It won't work a second time. Just don't let it show, Steven thought to himself and looked around unobtrusively. Inwardly, he hoped that no one could see his excitement. He glanced at his colleague, who, however, was busy with her work. Then he closed the prompt and moved on to the other message. So he let the message sit in the mailbox for the rest of the day.
