Emergency Delivery

Part One - Accident

Amanda was driving along the freeway towards the city as sun started to set. She was huge with her first baby and she needed to get to her friend's house for dinner. The traffic was very heavy for this time of the day. It was very frustrating as the cars slowly crept along the four lane roadway. Amanda was listening to music when she suddenly felt her middle tighten and it made her gasp for breath. She breathed slowly and tried to relax. Amanda had felt false labor pains before this so she was not too concerned. The car moved forward and the music continued in a cheerful way. Another pain hit her without warning and this time, Amanda was too close to the car in front of her. She slammed on the brakes but it was too late and she hit hard into the back of the four wheel drive. Another pain hit as the two cars came to a sudden holt in the middle of the lane. Other cars started to beep and go around the accident as the front driver stopped and climbed out of his car and headed for Amanda's side window.

"Look lady, you need to watch what you are doing in heavy traffic this time of the day!"

Amanda panted heavily as she pressed the button and the window automatically went down.

"I am so sorry but I think I have started labor! Oh, I can feel another pain! Oh, this is one is really strong!"

Amanda breathed in and out and tried to focus on the increasing tightening around her middle. In the meantime, the man in front of her had his mobile out and was calling for help.

"Yes, we need an ambulance for immediate assistance near exit 66 on freeway 7. Woman in labor. Maybe transitioning stage."

The man finished the call and offered to open the driver's door of the car and help Amanda.

"My name is Doctor Scott Hamilton and I help deliver babies. You seem to have run into the right car in your present condition. How long have you been experiencing pains? How many months are you? Is there someone I can call for you?"

"I am nine months and I am on my own. The pains have been off and on throughout the day but I thought it was false labor pains."

Another pain bombarded her lower body and Amanda grabbed the doctor's arm hard and moaned loudly. This one was extremely intense.

"I think this is not a false alarm. This baby is ready and coming! What is your name? I am going to stay with you and help when the ambulance comes. These pains are coming a little too close together. I think I should make sure everything is going to be alright."

"My name is Amanda and oh my goodness!" More pain and more heavy breathing.

"Amanda, I think you are about to give birth. I am very glad that this accident happened and you found my help."
