I know a lot of us AB, DL's, have done the Navy aisle brows in our time. Mostly as an older kid, with great wonderment, excitement, and wishfulness.
I use to love, breaking away from my mom in the stores, to seek out the baby department, or aisle. My favorite was Woolworth. It was something, not easy to do, when you were mostly, expected to stay close! You had to be somewhat inventive, about your need to wander elsewhere on your own. I can't say now, how good I was at this, but mom was usually preoccupied enough for short visits, or detours of my own. I can remember using the, " I want to go look at a toy" excuse plenty of times. But, sometimes the baby areas were out of the way of the actually toy department.
Sometimes I didn't read mom well, and she was in a hurry, and not going to stay in any one place long. This put my baby department browsing at risk of detection.
I was very aware, of not wanting to be caught looking at diapers, plastic panties, etc. How could I possibly explain my being there, or near.
It was such a thrill, to see all the different plastic pants there were, and I wanted to see everything there was to see.
I often thought I was caught at times, but I don't recall ever being questioned about it.
I do recall, one of the more easily assailable places to see baby items, but not very well stocked, was the trip to the food market. Mom did a routine route up and down every isle, so we would always pass the baby items. And back in my time, that was cloth diapers and plastic pants. Disposables were not popular yet. But, I did also brows disposables later, when they became more widely used.
Anybody ever do this too, and did you ever get busted by someone?
HEY, WHAT ARE YOU DOING LOOKING THROUGH THE BABY AISLE? "WHAT! ??? NO! I, I, I, WAS LOOKING FOR THE TOYS."
DO YOU NEED SOME DIAPERS? (YES!!!) NO! I THOUGHT THE TOYS WERE OVER HERE.
