There has been a concerted effort since the 60"s to stamp out enemas and douches. We all see the results of the war on enemas. The anti-douche movement got a big boost when Docs started to discourage them. In the late 60's, when I sold Massengill Powder, about 70% of the Docs I called on were fine with vaginal irrigation, just not too often. Year by year, the per centage of Docs who disapproved of douching, increased.
Several "research-type" scientists claimed to have proved in studies that douching injured the flora in the vagina and now they even claim that it is implicated in Pelvic Inflammatory Disease. There is only about 50 years of studies and clinical practice that proves that these accusations are "B.S."
The real reason douching has declined radically is that it is now seen as a real big "hassle", time consuming, messy; you know, the same reasons that enemas have declined. Thus, the increase in disposables. And the days of diaphragms and jelly are gone. Women don't need to flush out the spermicidal jellies and semen like they used to.
Like it or not, irrigation of any body opening is now seen as, old school, ancient history and totally unnecessary.
I'm surprised that no one has made the accusation that this is the fault of the "Big, Bad Pharmaceutical Companies", trying to make millions.
