My mom's favorite was a HEAT FOR THE SEAT paddle that she bought in a souvenir shop. It is about 17 inches long and 4 inches wide. Made of cedar wood. As for the number of swats, we usually got twice our ages with that paddle. Unlike some childhood spankings I've read here, mom observed frontal modesty during our paddlings. She would lecture us, as she undid and took down our pants, before putting us over her lap. Only when we were in position did she pull down our undies to about 2 inches below our bottom cheeks. This way, we usually were able to keep our frontal areas covered. I was the oldest- 6 years older than my brother and my cousin, Tara- who lived with us.

Clearly he was some kind of sadist. Even if you accept the premise that a physical punishment is appropriate and has results, why apply it with such force? Beyond a certain point such practices become counterproductive. And more importantly they become outright abuse.

Both hands indeed. What a brave and courageous person he must have been. I hope someone later punched his clock something good, so he could feel what it was like to be on the receiving end. Maybe this is what is actually meant by a schoolyard bully, an older teacher applying pain for punishment.

Yes, in the 60's it was common for the phy ed coach to paddle guys thru high school---It was in the locker room so any one in the locker room saw it---It hurt was on the bare butt as a guy bent over and it hurt alot---I do not think the coach was a sadist---Strange as it sounds today---it was just taken for granted that coach had the right and I guess, the duty, to 'keep those boys in line' so to speak and he needed to paddle guy to accomplish that--- and he certainly did that---and we did not question that he had the right to paddle us---It sure hurt---mAYBE THE GOOD OLD DAYS WERE NOT REALLY THAT GOOD

For me, it was the 70s and early 80s so locker room paddlings weren't just a 60s occurrence. I agree that the coaches weren't sadists. They were trying to do a good job of keeping order and they had one main tool that everyone believed was the right way to handle misbehavior. They were inconsistent sometimes in that if they thought a prank was funny or just boys being boys, they laughed or ignored it. If they thought that the prank was not funny, then they bent us over and scorched our butts, bare or not. We got that if someone got hurt by what we did, then we were in trouble, although that was not always true. Some accidents resulted in a paddling whenever the coach thought that it wasn't clear if it was an accident or that we needed to be more careful in the future. We played dodge ball a lot in PE class and someone was always getting clobbered in the head or the balls. If the coach thought it was deliberate, then we might get marched off to the locker room. The problem with dodge ball is that the point of the game is to hit the other team so hitting someone deliberately is also the point. But a guy that always aimed for the head or the balls was usually caught and dealt with. A few times it was an accidental hit, the coach knew it was accidental, but the thrower still got a trip to the locker room just so no one else got too far out of hand. That was me once and I thought it was unfair at the time.

I agree with what you said regarding the coach/P.E. teachers being inconsistent in their punishments. I'll add that I think a lot of it had to do with the individual boy, too. If you were a boy that was repeatedly getting into trouble, then the teacher would have a much shorter fuse when it came to punishing you. Even the slightest infraction of some rule might be enough to receive a paddling for such a boy. On the other hand, if you were generally a good kid and tried to play by the rules and stay out of trouble, you might get away with a mistake or two without any punishment.

I was paddled in school pretty much all the way through from kindergarten through high school. Some teachers paddled harder than others though. My second and fifth grade teacher (ended up being the same lady after she moved up to teaching fifth grade the year after I had her for second grade) spanked really hard. Let's just say my pain tolerance was a lot higher at 10 and 11 than at 7. My fourth grade teacher on the other hand couldn't kill a fly with the paddle. It wasn't really bad. They wouldn't threaten you. But if you did some of the things I and some of my friends did they would certainly wear you out without hesitation. It's just that everyone had the understanding that if you acted like you had some sense, then you had nothing to worry about. Pulling girls' panties up through the cracks of their asses was a big NO-NO. Other offenses that carried paddling as a punishment were setting off firecrackers or cherry bombs on school grounds (especially in urinals), fighting, lying, cheating on tests, willful destruction of school property, etc. I can't say I didn't deserve any of the paddlings I received in school, which weren't many......my ass couldn't stand many of those anyway. It was American discipline of the day. Not a bad thing IMHO. I survived it to be a law abiding citizen. A lack of discipline is why the kids of today are so fucking mean and uncontrollable. There's also no discipline or guidance in the home for many of the children of today. What incentive do they have to behave? You can't lay a finger on them anymore. The only threat is to either send them to in school detention or expel them from school......of which they don't care about anyway. But you teach them from an early age that malicious misbehavior can lead to physical pain and embarrassment, then they do have incentive to act right and learn what is being taught in the classroom. Be happy and learn?......or have a bruised ass? Your choice.
