For 12+ months I'd had recurring UTI's and kidney infections . Most of these had been diagnosed via my GP and antibiotics given . A particular nasty one in May/June last year left me hospitalised.
One day whilst an inpatient I went into urinary retention. The nurse that was on duty didn't listen to me at first when I told her that I'd been trying to pee since 10:30am that morning. It was now 10:30pm . I'd drank excessive amounts of fluid like I was told to do and I still couldn't go. Finally after having to crawl across the hospital ward floor trying to get to the bathroom did a nurse come . I was helped back to bed . A Dr was called and over 4 litres of urine was drained from my bladder . A Foley catheter was inserted and I was discharged with that in situ.
Appointments were then made for the following days to come and see a urologist, have a cystoscopy , urodynamics testing and eventually after 3 weeks a urology nurse to be taught how to self catheterise.
The first test was a cystoscopy the day after discharge. I was told to take my dressing gown and slippers, on arrival I was met by a nurse , asked lots of questions and was told to remove everything but my bra and put on a gown. I was told to leave it open at the back and put my dressing gown on , over the top .
I met with the surgeon ( male ) , who explained the procedure. I signed the consent form and followed him into the room. There were two female nurses and the surgeon . I took off my dressing gown and lay on the exam bed as I was told to do. I then placed my legs in the stirrups.
First they removed my Foley catheter . I was then cleaned with Chlorohexidine . Then a syringe full of Instillagel was used to supposedly numb the urethera. This had no effect whatsoever . Then I was told to relax as the cystoscope was inserted.
I was sore anyway from the foley cath being in place , this just hurt a bit more . I watched the whole exam. The only time it was really uncomfortable was when he took some biopsies from the sores on my bladder walls . After about 15 - 20 minutes he removed the cystoscope.
Whilst I was still in the stirrups he then asked if he could give me a pelvic exam . I said " yes " , so he did .
Everything felt ok , so he then inserted a new Foley catheter and I was told to go and shower if I wished and dress . He then said to wait in the waiting area and he'd call me back in to discuss his findings.
I showered and dressed and went back in to see him. He said that I had a very large bladder , with other issues going on and that urodynamics testing the next day would find any other issues .
I have posted previously at length regarding all other urodynamics testing I've had.
I'm sure it's titled " A visit to a Uro Gynae . It will come up with a search .
