Ovaries and Tubes examined

Locating and actually feeling the ovaries is not easy. They are situated well within the pelvic cavity for protection, plus they are not that large, about the size of a Brazil nut.

They can be found by applying pressure to the lower abdomen externally whilst two fingers inside the vagina gently push upwards. The ovaries sit each side of the vagina a little higher than the cervix

There are a couple factors that come into play...where she is at in her cycle and whether the ovaries and tubes are normal. Fallopian tubes are not going to be felt unless there is a problem. Ovaries, if normal in size may be felt during an exam but not always easily. You may run into a bit of confusion if she had uterine fibroids (fairly common) as one can be mistaken for the other.

At any rate finding the ovaries is a two hand process. Your internal fingers move upward into the right or left fornix....basically up and to one side or the other of the cervix and uterus and with the external hand in roughly the same position. You then make as sweeping motion downward with both hands. What you will feel is the ovary "slip" between your fingers. She may feel a bit of a twinge when this happens. An ovary is more almond shaped than round and moves very easily. You may be able to find the ovary without the sweeping motion I described but even in very thin girls it's not nearly as easy as using the downward motion technique. If you spend a bit of time studying pelvic anatomy charts and then visualize that with the real patient this become much easier since you have a good idea of where things are located anatomically and in relation to one another
