I must've been about 10 or so.
While visiting an Uncle and Aunt in a very small, very conservative town, there was a newspaper story being discussed. Sitting in my Uncle's living room, there was me, My Aunt and Uncle, of course, and two girls who lived a few houses away.
The story was about a doctor who had been beaten up severely by a local mob consisting of many people from that very neighbourhood.
The doctor had been 'examining' a young woman - she had just got married and had come to live with her husband in his ancestral home. She had developed a severe pain and had been brought to the doctor by her mother-in-law.
The doctor had taken the young woman inside his chamber and asked the mother-in-law to wait outside.
A little while later, the mother-in-law heard the young woman protesting about something. Her voice was loud enough to be heard in the waiting area.
The mother-in-law along with another man who was also waiting, rushed inside the doctor's chamber.
They saw the young woman cowering in a corner of the room and the doctor holding the end of her sari that was supposed to be draping her left shoulder.
There was an uproar as the doctor was dragged out and thrashed. A crowd quickly gathered and on hearing what had happened, everyone joined in to beat the fellow up.
Eventually the police arrived and broke up the mob.
The doctor, bleeding and semi-conscious, was taken to hospital where spent nearly two months - under security because there were several attempts made by others to beat him up some more.
The two girls commented that he deserved the beating and narrated their own stories about when they had visited the same doctor.
The first girl mentioned that she had visited him for a minor fever. He had insisted on giving her a check-up where he placed his stethoscope on her breasts and rubbed it around.
Then he had made her lie down, remove her jeans completely and given her an injection in her buttocks.
The girl felt that the injection was unnecessary. It had hurt a lot. He needn't have made her remove her jeans totally.
The second girl also added her piece. She had accompanied her father who had a fever.
The doctor gave her father some tablets. Then he turned to her.
He insisted that she could have also got infected with the fever and needed to be checked up.
He made her lie down and began to touch her 'inappropriately'.
He then gave her two very painful injections in her bottom - again making her take off her trousers completely. The fellow also stroked her bottom before and after giving the injections.
The second girl also insisted that the injections were not necessary and that he needn't have even checked her.
Neither of the girls went back.
Everyone expressed appreciation of the mob-justice that had been meted out.
In those days, in such a backward area, the concept of medico-legal cases did not exist - or at least, no one knew about it.
It was easier and quicker - and certainly more gratifying - to just thrash the offender!
The police didn't register a case. They suggested that the doctor leave town, which he did.
