Speculum examination

That's basically the same as my standard examination. I always perform a digital exam (with a gloved hand) before inserting any instruments for both vaginal and rectal exams.

I suspect that must make it a little easier on the patient.

The main reason I perform a digital exam first is to check for any abnormalities (polyps, lesions, tenderness, etc.). If the patient reports any discomfort or pain the instrumental exam is not performed.
