As has been mentioned, plastic pants need to be taken care of in a certain way to last any length of time. No oil or creams should be allowed to touch them, they should not be hung outside to dry, sun kills them. Even the oil from your own skin will damage your plastic pants after a while, so they do have limited life.
Rubber pants, or latex can be a good choice. But, they need care too, maybe even a bit more. They can be killed by oils and sun the same way as plastic. A good way to keep rubber pants healthy is to dust them with talcum power after you've used them, or washed them.
Plastic verses rubber pants, aside from their care, is a choice of what you like to feel. You need to try different pants to see what you would like. There are all different types of plastic pants out there, some heavy and thick, some thin, smooth, textured, noisy, quiet, soft, hard, etc. You need to pick what you like, or what's comfortable for you. Almost the same goes for rubber or latex pans. But, there ares less different kinds of rubber pants, then there are of plastic. Rubber pants may differ in thickness more then anything, the texture is pretty much always the same. The biggest difference would be in the waist and leg elastics.
