I had several embarrassing auscultation experiences.
Back when I was 14 we had a mandatory exam at school and I remember having to strip to the waist (no bra) in front of 10 other girls. My blood pressure was 140/100 and I recall my heart was pounding like crazy while I was sitting half naked being auscultated while others stared at me.
On another occasion, I was 19 y.o. college student and I went for another routine mandatory exam. At this time, there were 4 exam operatories having thin dividers in between. Those screens were non see-through, but you could hear all the conversations in other operatories. Anyways, doctor tells me to lift my shirt up and starts listening to my heart for what I expected will last few seconds. She listens, and listens... then slips stethoscope under my left bra cup and puts her fingers on my right wrist, feeling my pulse. That lasted what seemed like forever. Then she said “I heard multiple skipped beats.” And she continued to listen, this time counting my HR and looking at her wrist watch. I guess my heart rate picked up significantly as she commented, “I think you got scared a little, your heart is beating fast”. She referred me to a cardiologist for an ECG. The embarrassing part was that my classmates in adjacent operatories could hear everything.
Then, few weeks later I did go to the cardiologist. I honestly did not expect I will be auscultated, I thought they will only take an ECG. Imagine my surprise when they said “ok, doctor will see you now.” Doctor, a very professional guy in his 50s told me to strip to the waist (again - no bra, no gown), and listened to my heart sitting down, laying on my back and on the left side and also after doing 10 squats. For me, being so exposed in front of a man was very embarrassing. I remember feeling as if my hear was gonna burst out of my chest. I remember looking down at some point while stethoscope was on the inner half of my left breast, and I thought it was visibly jumping up and down with each beat. My heart was pounding the entire time and my heart rate was over 110. He heard multiple PVCs and thought he heard a murmur, but wasn’t sure. He also said “your heart is beating too fast, I can’t hear clearly.” I was beyond embarrassed. Eventually he told me to come back in few weeks.
