I don’t remember having my temperature taken rectally as a child.
Today, as an adult baby, it does make me feel like a baby 😃
Here’s what I remember:
At the age of 11, I was browsing through Dr. Spock’s ‘Baby and Child Care’ in the school library. (I have no idea why an 11 year old boy would be interested in baby care.) I came across a sketch of a baby, face down across his mother’s lap, eyes wide, and fingers splayed in surprise, as his mother held a thermometer up his bare bottom.
I had no idea that this was how you took a baby’s temperature! But, I felt a strange interest, imagining myself as the baby.
I searched out other baby care books, and found an Encyclopedia of Baby Care. In this one, there was a sketch of a baby girl, on her back with her legs held up by the ankles. Again, her mother held a thermometer up her bottom.
When I got home from school that day, I looked through the drawers in my parents’ bathroom, and I found a glass, mercury, rectal (baby) thermometer! I imagine it must have been used on me as a baby. I wish I had those memories.
That’s where my AB interests started. They are still going strong 44 years later. And, rectal temperatures, baby style, are a big part of that interest.
