While I am not a guy, I hope you don't mind me putting in my two cents worth here and tell you what happened during my kidney stones ordeads. Yes, I mean that as in more than one.
About 15 years ago maybe a little less, I started peeing what looked like solid blood. It doesn't take a whole lot of blood in urine to make you think so, so I just waited. At the time I was a paramedic so I just drank more water and went on. I didn't take myself to the doctor until I was passing fairly good sized blood clots. The doctor sent me to get a scan done and then sent me for lithotripsy. That's where they sit you down in this tub of warm water, which feels really nice and very relaxing. They place you in this surgical gown with nothing underneith except a pair of these mesh panties I guess you could call them for lack of a better term. The premis of this machine is to basiclly blast up your stones using sonic waves I guess, through your outter back so that there isn't any surgical scaring. I the idea is to blast the stones into pieces small enough so that you can pass them out. When all was said and done, I was able to pass a few fragments and some sand type stuff, but that was it. When I returned to the doc with my samples in hand he said that my stones were made of something to hard, (he told me what that was but I can't remember now) and that he didn't think it would do much, but the only other alternative we had at that time was to actually open the kidney and remove them surgially. He told me my best bet was to not do anything to them unless they started bothering me.
Well low and behold, moving forward about 10 years, which would be 4 years ago, my right kidney started hurting, and it was hurting more and more offten, also the duraton of the pain was lasting longer. It used to be that jsut every once in a whle I would have a twiinge that would take my breath away for a few seconds, but that summer, the every once in a while was turinging into a once or twice day thing and lasting 3-5 minutes at a time. It was leaving me totally exhausted. No matter what I did, how I moved, no pill I took even touched that kind of pain.
Doc and I decided enough was enough so he got me a very quick apointment into with one of his friends the Urologist. When I went into his office Doc wasn't able to be there wih me for that one but was for all the others. Dr.M gave me an exam, mostly questions. Then he took his fist and was going to pound on my kidney. I actually had to stop him and grab his hand before he pounded on that right side. I gave him the look of, "not going to happen", and then he said, "you really are in a lot of pain aren't you?" So then he sent me into the next room to have an x-ray. Dr.M read them and brought them to me to read as well. I am no doctr, but stones light up like a beacon in the nght, and I counted 4. He told me that he would be able to get rid of the 2 in the lower portion as thoee were probably what was causing my pain anyway because they were lose and moving around. But the other two were to far up, unreachable, and were way to large to come out, much dislodge themselves.
Surgery was scheduled the following week. And trust me when I tell you, it couldn't have come soon enough. The pain was almost a constant and I couldn't tak much more. They gave me an IV and started pushing pain meds which were not working at all. Doc was there by my side and several times he left to go and let them know that I needed more. Honestly, they still didn't work.
In the OR I got over on the other table. They had my left arm stretched out on a board for my IV's, and was allowing Doc to sit in a chair beside the bed where he held my hand the entire time I was under. I remember Dr.M putting my legs up in the leg rests and being properly draped for surgery, including that sexy surgical cap. Dr.M was standing between my legs talking to me about what he was going to do, how long it would take and that I was going to be okay etc He promised me that Doc would be there the entire time too, which gave me great comfort. I looked over at Doc and wanted to tell him how much I loved him, but I couldn't because of whom we were around, although I am almost possitive everyone knew anyway, lol. I started crying for some reason, not sure why exactly. I told Doc and Dr.M thank you. Dr.M asked me if I was ready and I started crying more and kept saying no, no. The 02 mask was put on my face and I could feel Doc squeezing my had tighter, then I fell asleep.
I won't up in recovery crying as well. That's what some medicines make me do. I don't think I was in all that much pain really. They put me on a pain pump so I could get a dose every 6 minutes. I was told from the start that the surgery would last between 30-45 minutes. Dr.M was working on my for 3 hours and finally had to quit, not because he was done but becaue that's the max time from what I understand to use the lazor safely.
I was also supposed to go home after surgery but because ofthe amount of pain was in they elected to keep me on 23 hour hold. I got VIP treatment though, was nice. They placed a stint to help me pass all the junk that he was unalbe to flush out. He said he flushed out as much as he could, which is the nice thing about this procedure. Together Doc and Dr.M decided to cut the string on my stint becuase I was having to keep that in for much longer than most people, which would help prevent a possible infection, as the string would make a nice ladder right up inside me to lead the bacteria where they normally don't hang out.
I wasn't scheduled to have the stents pulled out for 2 months, so I went back home and went back to work. Well now, let me tell you, that was probably the hardest 2 months of my life. I just kept getting sicker and sicker. In 2 months I lost almost 40 pounds. I hardly ate anything, a handful of crackers mayby and a bottle of vitamin water for the entire day was about all I could handle, and that was wih taking the max dose allowed of Zofran. It got so bad I collapsed at work and my DON called Doc and they ended up hanging 2L of IV solution. And so from then on, about every 3 days I would hang an IV up and sit at my desk and chart. True story,
When the time came to return to Dr.M for another x-ray and the stent removal I wasn't worried because I know it was about over. All three of us were in the room and Dr.M was going over the x-rays with us and he said all looked good and all of the large fragments were gone but that even after the stent was removed, I would still be passing a bit of sandy stuff, an he was right, I did.
He told me what to expcet when he pulled the stent out, I guess I knew it was going to hurt, but how bad could it be? I found out later that the equipment he was going to use to go up into my urethra was pretty large and midevil looking and Doc had purposfully kept himself in front of it so I wouldnt see it. Smart man that Doc is, lol.
So Dr.M said, okay, we will step out so you can take your pants off and get on the table. I looked at Doc, then looked at Dr.M and said, hell no, he's not leaving. Dr. M said that was okay. He returned in 5 minutes.
Dr.M totally gets Doc and I, on a few levels I believe, and besides that, we are all friends. He can be himself around us which we both greatly appreciate. So he sat on his stool and said "open wide" then he laughed. He squirted some numbing gel up inside me and while he let that work, he went to get his nurse.
She was nice and she immediately grabbed my hand and started holding it tightly. She told me to squeeze as hard a I needed to but to try not to move during the procedure. Doc already had my hand pretty tightly. Then Dr.M picked up his instrument and said, "okay, here we go" Next thing I knew Doc was standing up and laying over my chest to keep me still. I let out some naughty words, and loudly too, lol. Removing that hurt like a SOB. But it was over in less than a minute.
So, I know I am not a guy, but I have/had kidney stone experiences and or issues.
