I have given a few enemas at work and I don't mean to my patients, but to my co-workers or my employees, and I have also taken them a time or two as well.
The few times that I have given them to fellow employees it is because they were in need and were not able to give it to themselves. This has only happend a few times and the times that it did happen I was not in the mind set of med fet either. I still had my nursing cap on good and tight because these people came to me sick or hurting. I figure if they are feeling bad enough to come to someone they work with, with a problem that potentially embarrassing, they really must be sick. So, with my nursing cap on as tight as it always is with my other patients, I glove up and it's all business.
Now, I have had to take an enema at work twice as well, the first time I was having severe constipation/gas cramps. Took a fleet to get rid of the pressure and gas pain, and hopefully help the constipation but it didn't help. Was embarrassing and funny. Actually, I had forgotten about this until now oddly enough. After I took my enema and expelled what I could at work I went up and laid on the couch in the lobby to let the rest of the enema work it's way out. My co-workers knew I had taken an enema because we had all discussed it prior to. I believe they even gave me a coctail of warm prune juice and milk too. Anyway, they brought me up an attends and a chucks in case I had an accident. Those naughty nurses. Neither things worked. As a matter of fact, the following evening I came into work again, after having been to another urgent care center still in pain earlier that evening, and ended up collapsing at my med cart with a hot appy. I should have known, but when it's happening to yourself, sometimes you can't see the forest through the trees. Whats even more odd is that I had had those attacks before and just chalked them up to constipation. Also during my physicals everytime Doc palpated in my right lower quadrant I had either slight rebound tenderness or almost automatically had some guarding. He even one time sent me for a CT of my abdomin for kidney stones actually which also showed my appendex, and at the time it was normal. Go figure?
The second time I took an enema at work was gosh 1 and a half years ago now already. I again was having severe upper abdominal gas cramps and just could hardly stand up I was in so much pain. I know at that point it wasn't my appendix unless it grew back from the previous removal of the above mentioned. I sat on the pot for a good 30 minutes and nothing. At that point I still had enough energy to go find a suppository and take it. I was back in the bathroom for another 30 minutes nothing. Sweat was dripping or more like pouring off of my face, lol. But the waves of pain and cramps kept coming, so I finally just opened the door still sitting on the pot and yelled for Carrie, my favorite STNA who I knew was around. She came running and I handed her my cart keys and told her to bring me an enema and she did. ANd trust me, when you are in that much pain, you don't care who sees you sitting on the pot.
So she came back and with a little hessitation she asked me if I could do it myself and I assured her I could. But even after that was administered it didn't help. That's when I discovered for the first time fleet oil enemas. THey do nothing! Long story short here was when I left work that night I had to decide to either turn left and go home, or turn right and go to the ER. It was the 4th of July, and I knew the hospital would be packed, so I went home and tried another enema but with a bag. Ends up I had post infectious collitis, but took a long time to come to that dx, lol.
So those are the stories of how I have given and taken enemas at work. lol
