It was 1992 and my wife was going to our GP for a repeat prescription for the pill.We had been with this doctor since moving to the area a couple of years before a few week after the birth of our forth and last child.
The doctor was about ten years older than us so this would put him in his early forties and we found him to be very pleasant.I had only met him once professionally and that's when we registered with him.My wife on the other hand had seen him a few times mainly to do with the children's health but also for the contraceptive pill and a post-natal exam.Up to that point we had always had a male GP not by choice but due to the locations where we lived through my work they were quite rural and normally a one or two doctor practice and this was no exception. So she was used to having intimate exams by male doctors but there was always the district nurse present if it was at the surgery.
Now this was a time when the doctor still did a Saturday morning surgery and it was a good time for her to go as I didn't work weekends so I could look after the kids.I can't remember what she was wearing to the appointment but I do remember that she said she was going to mention to him that she had been having some light spotting each month. She had been put on the mini pill which meant she took it all the time and as a result she did not have periods.
About forty five minutes after after leaving for the doctors she returned home and I asked how she got on.She said that he gave her a renewed prescription for only three months and also did an internal exam. When she mentioned the spotting to him he said that it was common but thought he had better have a look to make sure things were OK.He did offer to prospone the exam until the Wednesday afternoon when he has his 'Ladies Clinic' and the nurse would be present.
My wife said it would be fine and he told her to undress from the waist down and lie on the exam couch. She did as requested and he first inserted a speculum and on looking inside he said that she had slight erosion of the cervix. He took a swab and a cervical smear before having a quick feel around with his fingers and then told my wife to get dressed.
The prescription was only for three months as he wanted to see if the spotting continued around her period time. The swab and smear came back clear and after three months he put her back on the regular pill although there was no more spotting.
My wife went on to have one more smear test and internal with him before we moved away three years later. He was a good doctor and my wife felt comfortable with him.
