I start by making a batch of sugar paste. Mix 2 cups sugar, 1/4 cup lemon juice or vinegar (I use vinegar, it's cheaper and seems to work just fine), and 1/8-1/4 cup water. Cook it to 260-265 F on a candy thermometer.
This produces enough paste to last for several months.
Supposedly this can be used without without cloth strips, but I always use them because it's easier and less messy. I found some old heavy cloth and cut it into about 1/2-3/4 inch strips by 2-3 inches long. My first try I used a inch and a half strip - do yourself a favor and use a narrower one, as the wide ones hurt more.
Put a little oil or powder on the area and work it in.
Take out a blob of the paste, stretch it out, and apply to the area. Spread a strip over it and push/massage the paste into the hair. Pull it off with the hair trying to keep the skin tight (it works better and feels better if you keep it tight). As soon as possible after pulling off the strip put pressure on the area to help the nerves calm down. My advice is to start small and gradually expand the sugared area to where you want it to be.
I lie on my back with my legs against a wall and a portable mirror positioned so I can see what I'm doing. Hands and knees with a partner also works well. If you're doing the front lying on your back works.
If you get the paste where you don't want it just leave it there and take a shower. The slight stickiness left after the process will also come of easily in the shower.
The strips can be reused a couple of times, probably even more if you hem the edges. Throw them in the sink with warm water for about 5 minutes, then wash with a bit of soap.
I do my anal area about once a month. It seems to make clean-up easier, though I can't point to a definite reduction in the occurrence or severity of hemorrhoids. Running a hand over the smooth skin does feel nice.
I find it doesn't itch when it grows back much, whereas a close trim did tend to itch a bit.
