Ssssoooo, I experienced a colonoscopy today...
The only good thing about the bowel prep yesterday, was that it entailed drinking a half-gallon, vs. 5 years ago when I had to drink an entire gallon of the fluid, and was gagging the last 2 to 4 glasses. Taint pleasant, but...
Today I went to the facility, having seen my gastroenterologist a couple of weeks ago, to get scoped. I was thinking that I didn't want to go to sleep during the procedure; a friend told me yesterday that he had had his colonoscopy a couple of weeks ago, and he asked them to limit the propofol so that he didn't go to sleep; too, he did not want to feel any discomfort. He got his wish...
I, on the other hand, had been thinking for a couple of weeks that I didn't want to go to sleep at all; i.e., no propofol. They gave me two drugs that relaxed me, but did not disrupt my brain, or the sensations of the scope being passed up to my cecum. Candidly, I've had worse journeys. There was some discomfort along the way, but I got to watch everything on the monitor; and, it was slick and clean for the most part. Nice healthy tissue.
My gastroenterologist took 4 very small polyps, and there was nothing to it, and no sensation whatsoever. No bleeding either.
All in all, it was a more or less a benign invasion of my anus, sphincters, and rectum to get to my colon, the scope going in about 5 feet. I wouldn't urge anybody to do it awake, as there is some discomfort; but, not enough for me to ask the nurse anesthetist to give me any of the propofol that she had ready
Ok, I am anally sensitive; however, that didn't play at all; nor was there anything med.fet about the experience today.
However, I do have a play.patient who lives in Iowa, and I was thinking yesterday as I did my bowel prep, that she might need to experience 'a bowel prep' the next time she visits Texas. 😉
Now ~ go out and have a gr8 Saturday evening...
