There are many good comments made in this thread. I would like to share my experience in laser hair removal since I am in the final stages with only two sessions left. I am huge advocate for this process since I think it is such a great option over shaving.
It is a bit of long a read but well worth it if you are about to spend the money to have this done. Here are what I think are the real important points you need to consider if you are debating whether to make this commitment.
1) You will need to find a facility that does the pubic region- not all do. Call first to narrow your potential providers to the ones that do.
2) Its expensive but many have deals. Look for specials and Groupons. The laser hair removal business is getting very competitive because the lasers now are not "single shot" devices anymore. The new lasers have a trigger that can be held down and the esthetician can sweep across a large area like your pubic region or back or chest in just a few minutes or so. This means the time spent doing treatments has been greatly reduced. They can now run many more customers through in a day and that has brought the price down significantly. Just for reference I live in Atlanta and I got a deal where I pay $99 a month with a six month commitment. I have been going pretty much every month or so. Just a note; I am having all the hair removed from shoulders down to my toes which is covered in the $99 a month plan. If I were doing just pubic area it would have been about $65 a month for six months.
3) Does it hurt to have your shaft and scrotum lasered? Yes a little bit but the pain is very quick and lasts less than a second. I wanted shaft and balls done and it really did not hurt that much- it was worth it to remove the hair. The one area that seems to hurt the most is area from just below your scrotum to your ass hole. But once it was done the first time I was ready for the it in the following sessions.
4) Absolutely try to stick with the same esthetician for the entire process. I have done this and I think having someone who can see the progress over many sessions and adjust the laser to get the best results is of paramount importance. You will need to schedule at least 8 (I am doing 12) sessions spread apart by 5-6 weeks.
5) As others have stated light hair (blonde and gray), the laser treatments will not be very effective. Before you buy a plan or pay anything visit the salon you want to do business with and have an examination done so they can see the color of the hair you want removed. If they are an honest and reputable they should be able to tell you what to expect in the way of final results. If your hair is too light then laser treatments may not be a solution for you. You might choose to have the laser process done because you have mix of mostly dark hair with a little bit of light hair that will be left over. If this is the case, you could go to an electrolysis person to clean up the remaining hairs. If the majority of your hair is lighter colored, your last resort would be to use electrolysis exclusively to remove all the hair, which is a tedious process since it is one hair at time. Check out some YouTube videos to see how this is done as well as the laser hair removal treatments.
6) Lastly a few words about having you penis handled by the esthetician. Mine does not touch it- she asks me to hold and shift it around and then she puts the laser on it for treatment. You would think I would have a big hardon but I don't. One time I did start to get larger while we were doing my pubic area but that was about it. My esthetician is smokin hot and as part of the laser treatment you are covered in gel lubricant so the laser can slide over the skin/penis. So here I am completely naked on the table lubed up with a sexy lady looking at my cock and how could I not be rock hard? First, the laser does deliver a short quick pain that kind of puts a damper on things. Secondly the esthetician is 100% professional and does not even hint at any sexual overtones so we never really get to a sexual situation.
Final point. I love the results. I have healthy silky smooth skin- no razor irritation, red bumps or ingrown hairs. This is a huge advantage over shaving and I for one am 100% satisfied with the results.
