That's interesting @AllyOTK . I constantly read about them checking for adhesions on boys and using that as a reason to circumcise them but I've never read about them checking females for adhesions until you mentioned it.

I have always had female gynecologists. While they pulled back the hood and looked at my clitoris, I can't remember any of them touching it. When I got married the first time, my gynecologist, asked if I was enjoying sex, I felt like saying since I was 14 but thought better of it.

Perhaps I didn't put my post in the right context. My first husband was a Navy officer so I went to a doctor for my pre-marital physical. When I went back for a routine visit she was asking if I was enjoying sex in the context of I am here to help if I wasn't. She had no idea what my previous sex history was.

During a real medical examination of the vulva, retracting the clitoral hood should be the norm, to verify the absence of even partial phimosis.

This partial phimosis prevents the clitoris from being fully exposed. So, yes, retracting the clitoral hood is a phase of the vulvar exam.

In particular pathologies or suspected nerve lesions, a clitoral sensitivity test may be required, simply by verifying the involuntary retraction of the clitoris and perineal fascia, with a few small and delicate taps on the clitoral glans above the frenulum of the clitoris itself.

Procedure and verification that ends in a few seconds, unlike, of course, what you would do in a doctor's game.

My thoughts are that in 99% of the cases, the doctor will do no more than retract the clitoral hood. To actually touch the clitoris, or "examine" it would seem to be quite rare unless there clearly was an indication of something being wrong under the hood. This might perhaps include an infection, a lump, a tear or something similar. In that case, perhaps a more close examination would be called for .. but as I said, in most annual exams, a visual exam is probably all that is necessary.

My gyn seems to check everything thoroughly which makes me feel relieved and healthy. But I have no specific memory of my clitoris being examined or commented on.

There is an exam using vinegar and its painful.

“Vinagra (acetic acid) or iodine may be used on your cervix to make abnormal areas easier to see. Photos or videos of the vagina and cervix may be taken. If areas of abnormal tissue are found on the cervix, your doctor will take a small sample”

@annecobain do you mean a colposcopy? Where you are in stirrups and the doctor uses a magnifying instrument to look at your cervix, usually after an abnormal pap smear result. I'm conscious that this is off topic but I had one of these done recently and it was not pleasant.

After being positioned in the stirrups and my vagina spread by the speculum, the doctor rolled up a large device with what looked like binoculars and a torch on top and focused this up my vagina onto my cervix. I could see my cervix projected onto a large screen to the left of me while the nurse took notes. The doctor then swabbed my cervix with the vinegar that you mentioned to see any areas of possible change. He then turned the screen so I couldn't see and told me to cough - I nearly hit the roof in pain as he was taking biopsies out my cervix with no warning or pain relief. He kept telling me to cough hard as he cut more and more samples from my cervix. My whole body was shaking from shock and I was bleeding a lot, it was all over the floor and the doctor had to pack my vagina with some sort of medical dressing to stop the bleeding.

It was a pretty traumatic experience and I would advise any woman also going for a colposcopy to demand that their consent is obtained before any biopsies are taken, and that they are offered some pain relief - being told that coughing will stop you feeling flesh being cut from your cervix is insulting.

I don't recall an instance where my clit was examined, or even the hood raised. Of course a visual exam is entirely possible, but in that case it was done quickly and without comment.

I have a family history of cancer in that area. My sister died from clitoral cancer. So, 3 or 4 times a year, I have to be examined. I fired my gyno after a tragically humiliating event at my last visit. My pcp does things differently than my gyno did but seems more thorough. During the exam, I am asked if and how badly sex or mastrubating hurts, how often, if there is bleeding... then, I am placed in stirrups and swabbed for cancer cells. He spreads me apart and palpates for any areas of abnormality. The good of my clitoris is pulled back and he examines around the clitoris as well. A stool sample and UA by cath is done and it's over til the next time.

If the question is: examination of the clitoris in real consultation, the answer is negative.

Indeed, since before the introduction of a speculum, we must examine the vulva, we see the clitoris and any abnormal learning would be deepened.

But there is no question of “decaling”

During the inspection of the vulva, we are led to palpate the labia to assess the Bartholin glands but here again it is not a question of stimulating the erection of the clitoris.

Concerning the colposcopy test, it is not really vinegar but an acetic acid solution concentrated enough to whiten the areas infected by HPV.

In addition, we also apply an iodized liquid (Lugol).

I know biopsies are not a very pleasant situation but injecting an anesthetic into the cervix would be more painful than taking samples with sharp forceps.

It is all the know-how and gentleness of the gynecologist that reduces the pain.

Of course we can suggest asking the patient's consent before carrying out the procedure but in the event of refusal, this would jeopardize the chances of a possible condition being diagnosed very early.

We must always consider the benefit of comfort versus the risk of a painful moment.

Uhm...no. Consent is paramount. The experience that @Tennessee21 described sounds like assault.

Crap no! It sure would not be included as part of any exam unless it was the problem. Infected piercing or some sort of damage.

I would be Lawyering up if a Doctor decided to raise the hood without a dam good reason.

Either the doctor had a standard way of working or took liberties with patients he thought he could get away with it with. Clearly, the second girl had had the same labia exam.

My wife's gyn doctor does a very minimal exam of her clit.

After we researched it she decided to have it done. It involves quite the examination of your clit and surrounding anatomy. It was the most through exam in real life i have ever witnessed. My wife also said she has never received a clitoral exam that detailed from a OB/GYN..

I believe it’s always just been a visual exam, as no one has ever referred to my clitoris, nor do I recall it having been touched in any way, during an actual exam.

I can definitely feel when my ob/gyn pulls back my skin to expose my clit. I’ve even had a couple doctors mention it if they were kind of “narrating” my anatomy for me during the external exam.
