Urine Samples

A friend told me that before being allowed to work on some sites he had to give a urine sample to be tested for drugs. Giving the sample had to be witnessed and in his case the female nurse watched him give the sample. He said that he found it very difficult to urinate whilst being watched. Is witnessing of urine samples common? If a female has to give a sample is the witness ever male?

I've had to give urine samples for drug testing before - it's common in certain industries where one person has a role which could influence an action being carried out in a safe way or not.

However, I've never been supervised. What has happened in the past was that I had to empty my pockets completely before going into the cubicle, the toilet flush had a dye in it so that any attempt to flush the toilet (perhaps with a positive sample in the bowl) will be identified. Also, the cups you urinate in have little temperature displays to show if you've offered up a clean (and cold) pre-prepared sample.

It seems much easier to witness the sample being given 😃 But the doctor needs patience, if the patient feels awkward or shy about urinating in front of him. Getting the patient to drink one or two glasses of cold water, quickly, will help him to produce the sample without inhibitions.

Maybe so, but in my experience it's done by a nurse you've never met before, and the method they tend to use gives the patient far more dignity.

I've never had to give the sample while being watched, even for job drug testing.

I have had to give witnessed urine samples more than I would care for being in the profession I am in, and I have also had them done where I was given a bit of privacy too. I much prefer them that way, as in with privacy, than without.

At one of the jobs I worked, an entire emergency drug box came up missing on Easter morning actually. Had a value of about 60,000 dollars on the street so I was told. Needless to say, it was a huge deal. The state was notified who in turn decided it was too big for them to handle so the FBI was called in to complete the investigation.

Everyone who was working the day before, the day of, and the day after Easter was tested. According to my friends who were tested, women tested women, and men tested men, all were witnessed. The women had to drop their pants so that the agent could visably see the urine stream flowing into the cup. All I can say is I was very thankful I was at my parents house during that time in question. I was questioned as to who I thought would do something like that, and that was nerve wracking enough, trust me.

I also have another nurse friend who was mandated for drug testing by the state who also had to be witnessed in the same way the FBI did, but depending on what day she was selected, she would have to do so in front of both sexes. She said after the first few times, it didn't really matter much. They were both nurses and they had both seen it all before.

I have only known of rare instances where a urine sample is witnessed.

I can confirm that I gave a urine sample for a job and it was witnessed by the nurse. The document regarding control of that sample also specified that the lab personnel witness the sample being given.

There in our country [CZ] are urine samples witnessed when there is a suspect, that the examinees could use drugs or they could be drug dealers. Or if sports(wo)men are examined for doping etc.

Wrestlers provide a urine sample as part of establishing weight. The instructions call for males lining up in no more than shorts and being observed by a qualified male in pairs at urinals. The other option is to strip down and use a cubicle. This is to show hydration, not test for drugs.

Sports Anti-Doping agencies require a witnessed urine sample, at least at the Olympic level.

In the USA, the USADA requires a same-sex chaperone to witness the athlete urinate, and the athlete must be exposed mid-torso to mid-thigh to prevent any funny business.

But, it's not very exciting for anyone....

I have given urine samples for employment and random drug testing. I must say I am glad they have not been wittnessed. For whatever reason my bladder gets shy for those. Interesting when reflecting on it, it is due to nervousness of being judged wrongly for the medication that is perscribed will show up. During some of these occasions I have been on controled medications that test out as opiates and one of them metabololize and show up as barbituates, corticosteroids, muscle relaxants. Yes, each time I do list what the Rx is, why and the perscribing physician and sign a release to contact and confirm if needed. I have never had any problems or issues. Obviously it holds issue for me and affects my bladder. I am sure I am not alone in this.

Giving a urine sample for a regular UA at an annual, my bladder is more than happy to empty! A full bladder with the physician poking around on the abdomen and during a pelvic exam is highly uncomfortable! I have had the beginnings of a UTI caught that way before I was aware of it lurking. Then I can have it quickly erradicated. Great additional benefit of giving it for an annual.

You think being observed for a urine specimen is bad? I was gravely ill in the hospital with a systemic infection. The aide brought in "clean catch" urine kit and told me to ring for her when I could pee. By and by I was ready. She took me to the toilet (in my room) had me drop my pants & hold up the gown. After putting on gloves she opened a foil pack with towelettes and proceeded to retract my foreskin and clean off the end of my penis twice. She held my penis & told me to urinate. After a couple seconds she squeezed my penis to shut off the flow, and after releasing the urethra obtained the specimen. Actually her technique was wrong. What she should have done was to stick the specimen cup into the freely flowing stream and pull it out before the stream stops. At least that's what the instructions said. Later the RN came in & I told him the aide needed additional in-service training on the technique. He asked why I didn't ask her to do it right if I knew. My reply was, "You don't tell anything to someone who's holding your penis!" He laughed, but we didn't get another specimen.

Has any one been catheterized for a drug testing?

I am nervous when I have to give an urine sample on my own i the toilet, I couldn't even think to be able to pee in front of somebody

The Navy always does observed pee tests for drugs. We always called it the "whizz quiz".

Growing up i had a dr that would have me pee in a cup while he watched ussaulay after the hernia exam he would grab a cup sit in front of me grab my penis pull my foreskin back and tell me to peehe would hold my penis and cup other times he would just stand there and watch me pee in the cup

Doctor only give me a cup and tell me todo it in the bathroom. but tell me to pull back the foreskin

I think I'd lose my mind if I were required to give urine in direct sight of someone. It's way too much of a violation of privacy (I'll spare getting into any politics).

As an aside, if one were guilty in a very serious situation and needed to hide the fact that their urine comes up positive there is ALWAYS a way to fool the test. I'd much rather they just take blood from me.

One could deliberately dehydrate, then insert a catheter, empty the bladder, and refill with sterile synthetic urine (or another persons urine - but that is disgusting and could lead to a UTI among other consequences!) This would easily fool ANY urine test!

Also, I don't really see how drug testing all the employees would catch the thief (in the example above). The thief could be drug free and just wanted to steal $60k worth of drugs. Further, I'm sure a staff member innocent of the crime might easily turn up positive for their own drug use.

I always make the patient give a urine sample in front of me regardless. It also shows that the genitalia is properly functioning.

I always had the fantasy that my playdoc would take a urine sample and control it to see the flow. I hope I can have this come true sometime.

The only time I was “observed” giving a urine specimen was at a medical facility for an employment drug test. Bathroom door left open and the attendant was behind me by about 20 feet. Not even sure she was looking my way. Drug test only, no physical.

Some time ago I was cathed as a result of a hospital stay and developed a UTI. The doctor wanted to do lab tests, so his nurse was tasked to take a clean pee sample. She had me sit on the exam table, pants and underpants down, and disconnected the catheter from the pee bag and drained a few milliliters out of my bladder via the catheter and then reconnected the pee bag.

Quite an embarrassing experience, actually, since the catheter has removed all pee control from me.

In June 2015 I was in a bad accident which severely damaged all the major nerves in my left arm. After 4 nerve release operations failed to relieve the pain I was sent to pain management and put on morphine and horizant. I have been on these drugs ever since. Pain management requires me to have periodical urine tests. Surprisingly, I have never been observed while peeing just shut the door and hand the sample to the nurse when finished.

Anytime a urine specimen is required a nurse gets a catheter out of my diaper bag .

Impossible for some. Paruresis, often called "shy bladder" syndrome, is when you have trouble urinating when other people are around. Depending on how serious it is, some people are not able to void without some or total privacy. In some ways, it is like urinary retention, where you "cannot go." But the key difference is that shy bladder is not caused by a physical blockage.
