To any of you Ladies - I have read in other areas that it is becoming more common for the Doctor to do a rectal exam after the Vag/rectal with you bending over the table. Is this true and have any of you experienced it at your GYN or PCP?
Nope. It has always been done in the stirrups for me.
My doctor do the rectal exam if i laying in the exam chair with my legs in the supports. But he moves the supports more up and my back more down at this procedure so i feel my butt lay over the edge of the exam chair full exposed
My wife recieved a wholly unexpected rectal exam in the ER. She went there complaining of stomach cramps. They ran blood tests and a urinalyisis. They did not perform a pelvic exam, which I thought was very curious. She waited over an hour for the female doctor to return after they had taken her blood and urine. When the doctor returned with a nurse in tow, she matter of factly asked my wife to turn on her side. My wife complied not thinking anything of it and was surprised when the doctor pushed her top leg up into her chest and straightened her lower leg out, roliing her more onto her belly. Her shock was complete when the nurse walked in front of her and reached over her to pull her gown up off her behind and grab her top buttock and pull it apart. Before she could even comprehend what was about to happen, the doctor told her " I need to check your bottom quickly" and swiftly inserted her finger deep into my wifes rectum. My wife said it felt like it was a foot wide and that the doctor and penetrated her all the way she could. She then felt in every direction, causing my wife to squirm uncontrollably. My wife told me she was so humilated as she had moaned loudly as well as the squirming. My wife said she couldn't look the doctor or nurse in the eye after it was done. She was even more upset in that the doctor sent her on her way with a referal to another physician. She had endured an embarrassing exam for nothing. While it was over very quickly, my wife said she felt like her finger was still in her the whole ride home.
My wife in her early 30's has never received a rectal as part of a gyn exam. However, she has had other GI issues which have required several rectals with a small speculum. She said that they had her lay to her side and inserted and it was never in the stirrups.
She told me that she knew what to expect so she wasn't surprised about the exam, but it was a bit embarrasing and uncomfortable for several hours afterwards.
My girlfriend's older sister, who is 35, recently had a physical with her GP. She and her husband and two kids see the same doctor for routine medical care, while she goes to an OB/GYN for her annual pap and pelvic. Her GP performs a breast exam as part of her physical, but does not do a pelvic because her gyno does. He also has never given her a rectal exam, until now. It was totally unexpected. He gave her the usual physical, and she thought he was done. Then he told her that since she is now 35, he will perform a rectal exam. She asked him why, and he told her that he usually gives all of his patients a rectal as part of their physical starting around 35, and if everything checks out all right, he won't do another one for another 3 years or so, unless indicated for a specific complaint or symptom. So she reluctantly agreed. She has had rectal exams from her gyno before, always done in stirrups at the end of the pelvic. Her GP had her stand up on the little step at the base of the table, turn around facing the table, pull her panties down to her thighs, and bend over the table, resting on her elbows. She was wearing an exam gown with just her panties on underneath. He pushed the gown aside, and gave her a thorough rectal exam. She told my girlfriend that she never had a rectal standing up before, and for some reason she felt more embarrassed being examined that way. Now my girlfriend and her sister look almost identical, so I would have loved to witness that exam. Now if only I could see my girlfriend bent over the exam table getting a thorough rectal exam when we go to her next physical!
I've never had a rectal exam standing up and bending over the exam table. I've gotten recto-vaginal exams at the gyno while in the stirrups and one time my family practice doctor did a rectal with me on my side, leg pulled up due to some belly issues I was having. The 'standing and bent over' position I've always thought of as a guy's exam thing.
Always in stirrups with my bottom at the edge of the table. it is standard practice at my annual exam to have a rectal. This has always been the case, regardless of doctor. My gynecologists are always female by my choice.
My doc always insert his index finger gently in my bottom and keeps it there while performing the whole gynaecological examination. I don't know why he does it, but I don't mind at all!! And the position is always in the stirrups with my bottom right at the edge of the table. I always find myself thinking I don't want it to finish too soon!
My Gyno does the recto-vaginal exam while I'm in the stirrups and then she does a rectal exam while I lie on my left side with my knee bent upwards.
My girlfriend often gets a rectal exam at her gyno appointment...she's positioned on her side...once she told me she had it done while she was bent over...she said she was really scared she was going to fart!
I think a rectal should always be performed. An exam with an anoscope should always follow the digital rectal exam. Most gyns have the disposable anoscopes in the same drawer with the disposable specula so it's pretty easy to apply K-Y to the tip and go back in. This time it's just a different hole and feels a little tighter.
I have always gotten a rectal-vaginal and a rectal exam at the gyno, except I think my first one. Not sure I did then.
My doc has only once done a rectal exam, which makes me curious - why only once?! I would love it if he remove the vaginal speculum and then told me to get on all fours (as another responder mentioned). He inserts his finger, then a second and probes me. He then removes his fingers and inserts the rectal speculum and spreads me wide and shines a light inside... Oh my...
My GYN does rectal exam with me in stirrups, my GP with me on my left side. The colon doctor asked me to drop my pants and lean over the table with my knees in a pull out section of the table. I find that very embarassing.
If a patient goes to the doctor complains of anal itch and the DR wants to do a cursory exam to rule out certain ailments having the patient bend over the table is usually the fastest way to accomplish the exam if there is not going to be a full pelvic exam.
I only had one exam by my doctor. And that was at the very beginning, at the first or second (or may be third) visit. And only a short exam with the finger. But then never again at the doctors. Dont know why ...
When my regular doc does a basic physical, he does the rectal in the knee-chest. At the gyno, it's always in the lithotomy position because i'm in that position anyway. Either way, no fun at all.
My wife only has had a rectal in the lithotomy position. On finger, not a recto-vaginal. Takes about 20 seconds because she repeats the bimanual that way.

the explanation about the gynecologist have performed a recto-vaginal only once and at one of the first appointments may be that he could have doubts about the shape and position of your uterus and wanted to "know you better" so he was basically evaluating your uterus rather then looking for any rectal abnormal findings. Rectal finger goes "higher" in the pelvis ( medium finger, longer ) than the vaginal finger ( index, shorter than medium ) and in some patients it's easier and more effective to "lift" the uterus that way and perform a better bimanual
Well, I didn't get a rectal exam, maybe after a certain age you get one...I cannot tell how I would react to such a line: Please undress, we have to take a look inside your butt
Rectal exam w guiac smear for occult blood should always be performed while you have the patient in your office - just takes a moment and can assist you w prev med and education
Never had a rectal exam, but would like to experience one. Actually never had anything in my ass. Hopefully that will change soon...
I'm a guy, not a women, but anyway... when I had hemorrhoids, I was examined by 3 different doctors (2 male, 1 female), and they all did the exam the same way: with me on my side, both legs bent. Each doctor first spread my cheeks with both hands for a visual exam, then inserted a finger in me. The female doctor used a very bright exam light and had a female nurse present although the nurse did nothing but watch. One male doctor had a nurse there, but she stood on the other side of the curtain. the other male doctor had a female nurse assist him and he talked her through the exam as he did it.
I had one in the ER that I particularly remember. I went in for dull cramps and belly pain so after waiting forever I got into a room and was told to put on the gown but leave my panties on. The doc came in and asked a lot of questions about personal stuff like my bowel movements and sex stuff. Then he listens to my belly for a long time with his steth..really pressing into my bowels in particular which hurt a bit. He nudged my panties down till the top of my pubic hair was showing. The he pressed all over with me on my back. He asked me to roll on my side and from behind he pressed into my belly again. Then he says " I know you're uncomfortable right now but I need to check your bottom quickly. He spreads my cheeks first and just looks..I'm curled up on my side with my anus open and I know he can see my pussy too. He asks me to bear down like I'm having a bowel movement and he's watching while I strain. He asked me to do it again and then relax and I'm gOing to feel his finger on my anus. He held it over me for a second and the cold lube is pushing into my bottom. Then he starts Pushung in his finger which felt huge!! He stopped part way and then said " just a little deeper now" and pushed in further. I was panting and moaning a little cause my belly really hurt and this wasn't helping. He asked me to bear down again while his fingers in there and then asks me to "squeeze his fingers in my bottom" which felt really weird. He said almost done..he's had his finger up my bum for a good minute now. He pushed his free hand into my lower belly again a bit almost like he was trying to touch the fingers in my bottom. Then that was it. Turned out I had a cyst and stomach virus that combined
I answered this thread several years ago, but since then I've been lucky enough to receive a rectal exam from a few different doctors. It does not seem to be a regular part of most gynecologists' exams, I guess it's too embarrassing for most. But I usually end up getting a rectal exam when I admit to having had anal sex, and also the few times when I've been in the emergency room with some kind of belly pain.
However, I've never yet been asked to bend over the table. So far the doctor has always done the exam while I'm still in the stirrups, although I have a very faint memory of a rectal exam performed on me while I was lying on my side just as I was falling asleep prior to surgery. That might be a dream, though.
Aside from my colonoscopy, for which I was 100% knocked out, I have only had 1 "rectal exam," although it seriously lasted 1 second. I was there for abdominal pain, and she did a quick "in and out" for a hemoccult test. I was so startled I almost yelped.
To 73#: I would be higly surprised if a gynecologists were embarrased because of making rectal exam. However, I am a male, you ladies may know this better.

I would imagine that AshleyBelly was referring to the embarrassment of the patient not the gynecologist.
I don't go to a GYN because a GP can do the same thing, is absolutely just as qualified, I am usually more comfortable with my GP anyway because he has to treat all of me, not just my girly parts, not to mention he's cheaper, and because I am lazy, I don't want to go to any more doctors appointments than I have to, not to mention neither Doc nor I really enjoy anyone else taking care of me.
With all that being said, I always get rectals at my yearly physicals, and they are always done in the stirrups. However, I would love to get one standing and bent over the table. To me, in a play setting however, that's something I find very very hot. It's also how I like to be spanked, and one of my favorite positions for having sex in, and my most favorite for getting shots in.....Maybe someday?
I went to the doctor one time with my girlfriend. After speaking with the male doctor she was given a breast exam and pelvic exam and when she was allowed to pull her feet out of the stirrups was definitely relieved because she thought it was over. However, the doctor asked her to turn around, face the table and place her feet shoulder width apart and her chest flat on the table. She was not happy at all. I could see her face get all wrinkled up while he pushed his finger deep into her anus.
