It all depends on why you are considering either.
If you are just looking for a little help to poo, a small, warm water water, enema retained 10-15 minutes is a good option. It will lubricate and cause a mild urge. If you are more badly constipated, a bag enema, taken lying down, is probably a better option.
If your intent is for fun, laxatives offer a far greater variety of options. You can choose hard or soft poo, large or small result, fast or slow acting, very cramping or a gentle hint.
The firmness of the poo can be varied with Miralax. This stuff keeps water in your colon and the effects usually start within 24 hours. A standard adult dose will pretty much assure a fairly soft poo. You can adjust the dose widely from almost no effect to gushing liquid poo. It's used in big doses for colonoscopy preps. IMO, Miralax is better than Colace to adjust firmness.
If you want a large result, take a dose of a fiber supplement, with plenty of water, three times a day for several days. Yes, the stuff tastes gloppy and is often hard to get down, but it will really bulk up your poo. The powder gives better results than the capsules.
There are several options for meds that make you go. They are Bisacodyl, senna, saline, and castor oil.
Bisacodyl (Dulcolax) is easy to take and generally works in 6 hours or less. One pill will cause a definite urge but not much cramping. Larger doses, up to 6 pills, usually cause serious cramps and several loose to liquid poos with great urgency with little warning.
Senna is a good, versatile laxative. It usually works in about 12 hours, but can take longer. It does not soften the poo much, unlike Dulcolax, so liquid poo isn't usual except in very large doses. I like it because the dosage can easily be adjusted per desired effect. It is available in both pill and powdered form. The latter can be blended with prunes, dates, figs and raising and molded into ice cube trays to make very laxative, tasty bonbons. Measure carefully.
The salines, from Milk of Magnesia to Citrate of Magnesia to Phospho Soda to Epsom Salt are not much to my liking. Many taste foul and the result is almost always great urgency a flood of watery poo.
Castor oil is IMO mostly reserved for punishment. It is horrible to take and the taste can linger a long time. Large doses can be given without fear of overdoses, because when enough of the oil has been digested, you poo and the remaining oil is just pood out. Results can be very rapid, under an hour, but almost always happen within 6 hours. If the person is constipated, strong cramps are likely. Given at bedtime a messy accident is likely. Castor oil can go from feeling nothing to uncontrollable pooing within a minute.
In summary, if I were looking to have, soft, easy to pass, poos with just a hint of urge my choice would be the fruity Senna squares and Miralax. Adjusted properly, you'll get a mild reminder it's time to poo and then you relax and have an effortless, formed poo, with no bearing down
