Gotta disagree with you, Matt.
UKGyn is run by a guy who for years paid all of the hosting expenses and other costs out of his own pocket. For years people did NOTHING to help him offset the costs. Lots of people would become "members" and download tons of content, running up big bandwidth bills, without contributing either financially or with any content. Lots of leaching, lots of trolls. Andy asked for contributions, and most of the leaches and trolls gave nothing. Quite a few of his regular members DID contribute, but costs still outstripped contributions. Finally he closed the membership, and made the "contribution" for new members mandatory. He makes no profit on the site, and still spends more than he brings in. The sponsors help, but not as much as you'd think.
Sometimes you have to contribute something to get what you want, and quite frankly, I'm tired of people complaining about Andy's website.

I figured several people would disagree, but it is also necessary to provide another perspective.
I wouldn't really say *years*, because the forum, as it is now, began in 06, since has been purged with mandatory donations for more than a year. Before that, the forum existed on a free hosting site. Whether it is up to the users to help defray the costs of running a website, that's up to each person. That's no right or wrong answer. For me, no. There are alternatives for free (this site, torrent sites, chats, etc). That's also the way it is for most people. I like several tech blogs, Gizmodo, Engadget, LifeHacker, and even though I enjoy the content, it isn't something I'm ready to pay for. When a person spends money online to use a site, they are generally paying for an additional service, not to use the site itself.
So, generally, everything you said is true, but irrelevant. The point of the thread is not to defend Andy's decisions, nor to criticize how he does things. The point is to give an opinion, one way or the other, as to whether UKGyn is worth whatever the price of admission is now. I can honestly see no reason to spend money there because of the points I listed. Take a look at the site, what is there is here--for free.
