Warning About Sea Water Enemas

Well the brain eating amoeba couldn't effect someone via an enema the only way it can hurt someone is if it gets in the nose then you are pretty much dead anyways that is why you don't go swimming in untreated pond water that is at a temperature of over 80 degrees

EVERYONE, PLEASE READ THE DANGERS OF USING SEAWATER. If you want salt in your enema, add one teaspoon of table salt per quart. That's one level teaspoon, or 5cc's of table salt per quart. Anymore will give you a hypertonic solution and will cause fluids to osmose from your body into your colon.

ALL 92 known elements are present in at least trace levels in Sea Water. as are MOST of the world's known bacteria and THOUSANDS of kinds of microorganisms.

Then there is the chemical pollution issue.

I can not imagine taking an enema with that kind of risk.

Epsom salt and soapsuds in tap water is risky enough I don't need to put myself in mortal danger for an enema!!

I echo the recommendation to avoid sea water, but if you feel you must then don't use the water until you have boiled it for 5 minutes and let it cool down to a safe temperature. Note that this will only kill most organisms, and will do nothing against toxic chemicals.

I would be careful using well water also unless it had been boiled for a while. Same for usin' water out of the crick what runs back yonder.

I wouldn't worry in most cases. Generally the people who put in wells put it deep enough that the ground filters out pathogens, and the people I know who have wells have the water tested from time to time so they know it's safe.

Note that these are bored wells for water, not the old decorative hand dug well out front with the falling apart cover on it, the one that Billy could fall down, the one that no one's really used for 100 years...

I remember reading a "Sea survival life-boat with a few or more folk and the senior lady gave sea-water enemas to all for 'hydration'" ;maybe "Survive The Savage Sea"? I can't remember. (--be kind, I'm old.) Anyway they survived to tell the story and much of the credit went to 'the nurse' who came up with it...so to speak.

Okay Folk, I looked it up and 'Yes' it is "Survive The Savage Sea" by Dougal Robertson (Bantam Press) --easily found thru Amazon Books; I've had very good luck with Amazon's searching process.

Anyway starting on page 73 the nurse on board the raft starts looking for some tubing suitable for enemas using the brackish water for a 'retention enema' .....but it is "brackish water", NOT sea-water. The final analysis was that sea-water taken as an enema was as bad for you as if taken by mouth and not advised.

Susie, you're absolutely 'dead-on', Girl. --big surprise. Anyway, once again one has to know the 'whole story' for a proper view. So urine, brackish water all okay, but NO SEA-WATER! (Sorry folk, have to wair for the drinking water to turn "brackish"....oh well.

A few years ago I was staying at a resort on the Caribbean, My room wasn't far from the water's edge, I had the inclination to try a seawater enema. I slipped out in the night and filled a one liter bottle with seawater, the temperature probably in the high '80s.I didn't have any abnormal effects, perhaps I was just lucky. I have no doubt the water was filled with various plankton, etc, although it didn't stay in me for long. From what I've read, probably won't do it again.

The pollution is a bit of worry but we probably breath more pollution in our air each day. The salt content on the other hand will likely lead to hypernutremia and crenation pretty quickly. The pollution and bacteria will not even have time to have an effect. so yeah could you do it, probably but with any large amount of it you would likely kill yourself with the electrolyte imbalance.

Believe me, the unknown variety of microorganisms and and other tiny organisms are a much greater danger than the other things you described.

People have a more or less normal variety of colonic bacteria which are NOT the same as what's living in the ocean and a sea water enema is not going to cause hypernatremia.

If you're dumb enough to try this, you deserve what you get. Sorry.....no sympathies. Just don't do it with your kids, and other's who may not have the sense to recognize the dangers.

Just yesterday, I found a paper my father had written for a social studies class when he was in High School He graduated in 1977 so this was probably the 1975-1976 school year.

It sparked my curiosity

At that time there was a widely used pesticide called DDT It was developed during WWII an was used in the US into the 1970s and in much of the world into the 1980s It was used because it could be applied ONCE and last essentially forever, never having to be re-applied.

Turns out it was killing off birds and contaminating water both ground and runoff not to mention soil for some distance beyond the fields where it was used. It was also broad spectrum killing off other types of creatures that were never targeted.(Thank you Captain Obvious!) but at the time it seemed acceptable

Once the stuff was finally outlawed it was no longer re-applied but it was still in the environment. By now that means it's i sea water. Don't know what the quantities are but it IS still in sea water. As are numerous other now illegal chemicals many of them deadly insecticides. True it's low levels that are not considered toxic in and of themselves but there IS a longer-term effect.

One more thing you have to be aware of if you are going to take unprocessed sea water into your body.

I heard that it was fun to insert one of those tunnel butt plugs that hold your anus open and then go skinny dipping. I was planning to try that at a Florida nude beach to experience water injections from breaking waves. I guess I'll have to limit such fun to sloshing around in my bath tub.

Besides the risks mentioned elsewhere here, consider this: there is now nowhere in oceans world-wide that is not contaminated with micro-pulverized plastics that are invisible. This is causing problems for sea life that inevitably ingests sea water as it can migrate throughout the system and accumulate in various parts of the body. Using sea water for enemas presents a perhaps greater risk from such plastics debris than does the various flora and fauna existing everywhere in the ocean. - Archimedes

As a former pharmacy tech, in a beach community in California, I would never do this. The amount of ear drops sold to surfers with really bad ear infections from swimming in the Pacific Ocean is enough to make me not hardly even want to wade in the ocean, let alone swim in it. Ear infections are bad enough (a life time of them for me), but I wouldn't want an infection down there because I purposely put ocean water up there! I don't think so!!

I only want water I know to be safe!

That being said, I have a series of naturopathic books from the 1930s extolling the benefits of seawater enemas.

Knowing a few of the solutions I got flushed with as a child, I must say I feel lucky to still be here! While mostly salt, soap or soda there were some iodine and chemical based solutions that were probably downright toxic.

I don't know what she used, but I do remember one enema that went in easily, but didn't want to come out. I pooed chunks of it, with the help of a few more enemas for a couple of days until I finally saw normal brown poop again. My memory of it is pleasurable, but it was probably quite dangerous. It was a floury looking powder that I became viscous and gelled inside. Like Metamucil, but that requires a douche syringe or plunger to instill, this flowed in with no urge to expell. I think it was a commercially available product, this would have been about 1950.

For several years and serving on many merchant ships, I took hundreds of gallons of sea water enemas. That's because those ships take the sea water and distill it to remove the poisonous impurities. So, technically, the water for my enemas at sea is distilled and no longer sea water. Men have died in life boats at sea from dehydration rather than drink sea water.

Please! Use only tap water, bottled or distilled water for your enemas and continue to post your results!

I don't know why people are looking for trouble when clean water is so readily available.

There have been SEVERAL infections from "flesh-eating" bacteria here on the Gulf Coast as a result of swimming in contaminated sea water. Usually, the site of infection has been an unhealed scrape or cut. Guess what? Your colon looks like one huge open wound to these antibiotic resistant bacteria! The resultant infections have resulted in amputations and frequently DEATH. There are numerous protozoans in seawater which can kill colon tissue. If you just HAVE to do seawater enemas (i.e. have an uncontrollable urge) then boil it for 10-15 minutes first. At the risk of sounding snarky, if you would use seawater, I suppose I should tell you to let it cool after you boil it. LOL!

Sea water has a much higher salt concentration than we have. That much salt in an enema will draw water out of your system, making the enema effectively larger than the volume you put in there. But the caution about microbes should be heeded. So if you really want such a solution I suggest you make your own imitation sea water, or at least boil it.

Be cautious.

I STRONGLY recommend against them. Even if the naturally occurring microflora and microfauna were harmless, which I doubt, in the area where I used to live there are numerous occasions when the beaches are quarantined because of pollution. Adding to that, San Iego, where I lived for many years, has allowed sewage effluent into the ocean for decades. It's treated, but I don't believe the treatment is totally effective. San Diego used to have water as clear as Hawaii when I was growing up. It certainly does not now. This is probably true for multiple reasons, but at least one is allowing sewage effluent to enter the ecosystem without moving through hundreds of feet of dirt into the aquifer.

NO seawqter enemas. They could kill you. Another example: HIV virus was reportedly found in years gone by in the seawater in the Gulf Coast.

Just don't. If drinking sea water can make you hallucinate and dehydrate you then don't put it in your colon either.
