Hi guys,
I'm not a medical professional, but I write about all sorts of things, including healthcare. A client asked me to write an article for prostate cancer awareness month, which is this month--September. Oddly enough, research is inconclusive on whether regular ejaculation by any means, promotes better prostate health. You can find studies that conclude either way (i.e. ejaculation promotes a healthier prostate or does nothing), this is why I say there's no definitive conclusion. I was highly surprised to find this during my research on the topic because common sense would be in favor of regular ejaculation reducing the risk. In any event, it appears that ejaculation isn't going to hurt anything, based on recent studies.

Vitamins/supplements, as Einlauf points out, such as zinc, are reputed to promote prostate health, as well as selenium. Then of course, there are herbal remedies, the foremost among these herbs being saw palmetto. I have a close friend who is 64 and has taken saw palmetto since he was in his early 40s. He swears by it, but it could also be his genetics and his lifestyle that have kept his prostate happy and healthy. And, as suspected, there are studies indicating saw palmetto works and other studies that conclude it has no effect on prostate health.
We've all heard of herbal and "natural" remedies that have proven to be dangerous....take ephedrin as an example. The point is, proceed with caution and do your own research. Also, since supplements, herbs, etc. aren't regulated by the FDA, you never know what you're really getting.
Studies have indicated that:
- A diet high in saturated fat may be a risk factor.
- Men over the age of 65 who exercise vigorously on a regular basis may have a lower rate of prostate cancer. (source: National Prostate Cancer Coalition)
So - it seems that you're better off eating a healthy diet and exercising than hoping an enema will help keep your prostate healthy.
And...here are some interesting stats...
Prostate cancer effects one in six men. It is estimated that there are more than 2 million American men currently living with prostate cancer. One new case occurs every 2.5 minutes, and a man dies from prostate cancer every 19 minutes, according to the Prostate Cancer Foundation. To put prostate cancer into perspective, The American Cancer Society’s report, Cancer Facts and Figures 2008, estimates that 186,320 men in the U.S. will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2008; the estimate for women diagnosed with breast cancer is 182,460.
What I didn't say is that the mortality rate for breast cancer is higher...so I kind of "cheated" a little, but I wanted to make a point.
