Yes, I have. About 6 years ago I went to an Urgent Care clinic when I was suffering from a sinus infection. I didn't have a regular doctor because I didn't like to have to make an appointment. My previous doctor usually made me wait a week or two before I could see him. And when you are sick, you can't afford to wait that long.
Anyway, I went to the clinic, paid my co-pay, was taken to an exam room, and when the doctor came in and asked me what my problem was, I told him I just needed some antibiotics for my sinus infection. He checked my ears, throat, nose, etc.
Then he told me to lie down on the table. He felt my chest, abdomen, legs, asked me to take my shoes off so he could feel the pulses in my ankles and feet.
Then he said he would like to do a rectal exam. I was caught totally off guard, and I wasn't prepared for it, plus I had never had a rectal exam. I just told him "maybe next time", knowing I probably wouldn't be coming back, anyway.
As he is taking out his prescription pad to write the scrip, it suddenly dawned on me that at my age, 60, I had never had a prostate exam, and I was long overdue. I just wasn't too crazy about having it done, because it seemed so humiliating. I told him I was sorry, and maybe I should have it done after all.
He said okay, and asked me to get back up on the table, lie on my side, and lower my pants and underwear to my knees. I did, and then he inspected my butt, then inserted his finger into me. I jumped a little because I was not used to the feeling. He was very apologetic for startling me, and I told him it wasn't his fault.
After I got dressed, I went to the desk and picked up my prescription and left.
On the way home, I didn't know how to feel about what had just happened. I couldn't believe that I went to a doctor for a prescription, and ended up having a below the belt exam. Most doctors don't do anymore than they have to, so this exam was completely confusing to me.
After a few days, though, I started to feel that this was the first doctor who seemed totally interested in my health, not just a quick in-and-out visit. Anyway, I decided I would make him my regular doctor, and since it is an Urgent Care clinic, I don't have to make an appointment when I'm not feeling well.
So, that's my story, and he's still my doctor.
A few weeks back, during my last visit, I was in the waiting room with a black gentleman, probably 35 to 40 years old. He was called in right before I was. When I was called back to an exam room, the doctor was in the process of examining him. All of a sudden I hear the black man yell: Oh, wow, that hurts!!!
I knew immediately that he, too, was experiencing his first visit to this clinic, and was completely caught off guard by the prostate exam.
I realized then that my doctor obviously gives ALL men coming to the clinic prostate exams, regardless of their age. I guess there's no law against that!
