Hi Folks,
I'm wondering just how popular enemas are in the UK. To me they seem to be a dying art and appear to have gradually faded away. I know plenty of folk in the USofA and France use them, but as a youngster some 35 years ago, I can remember seeing Higginson's Syringes in red-rubber and huge rubber bulbs on display in chemists and surgical supply shops.
I remember whilst rummaging in my parents bedroom (whilst they were out) I found a lovely red rubber syringe and several long and curved nozzles, neatly packed in a strong blue box.
A decent enema prior to childbirth was nearly always given to an expectant mother (poor thing in her labour agony) these have now been dispensed with. Often a good cleansing enema was given on a hospital admission or certainly before exploratory surgery in the stomach. I wonder do any hospitals still retain good old enema tubes and nozzles?
Severe constipation is now treated with tiny 'fleet enemas' or suppositories.
Is the good old long and plentiful soapy enema really disappering from our households, even behind closed doors' ? I know there are plenty of discussions on enemas of all descriptions on this forum, but I'm talking in far more broader terms.
I can even recall adverts in magazines such as 'Forum' for enema nurses offering all sorts of treatments for afectionado's, but even these practices have long since disappeared. I know one can still see adverts for colonic irregation in certain gyms, health clinics etc. But no enemas. Are we losing the skills to cleanse the bowel, tone-up after a hangover and keeping our bodies clean.
Any thoughts on this people?
